In 2019, IGEL — a world leader in software-defined endpoint optimization and control for the secure enterprise — announced an alliance with Tehama to provide Amazon WorkSpaces via Teradici PCoIP® Software Client for Linux. IGEL Technology Evangelist Jeff Kalberg, recently sat down with Jaymes Davis, Tehama’s Head of Customer Success, to talk about the collaboration.

Jeff: Can you start by telling a little about Tehama and what you do?

Jaymes: Sure thing. We provide a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution that gives organizations controlled and monitored virtual workspaces for geographically dispersed teams that need secure access to corporate assets. Our platform has a pretty rich toolkit to support this secure access, including controls, policies, and secure vaults.

Jeff: What inspired Tehama to develop its solution?

Jaymes: The idea came out of our experience in IT contracting. You see a lot of outsourcing in IT — workers literally all over the world accessing corporate assets, often in not very secure ways. With workforce trends going even more in that direction, beyond IT, we realized this is something enterprises urgently need to access the right skills and talent without putting their corporate data and systems at risk.

Jeff: Do you have an Amazon WorkSpaces strategy as part of your approach?

Jaymes: We do. Amazon WorkSpaces provides a secure desktop but requires additional infrastructure management to enable end-to-end datacenter and cloud connectivity. We close the gap by providing the infrastructure that organizations require to provision their desktops. With Tehama, you can get customers connected in less than an hour, and you can implement multiple strategies for Amazon WorkSpaces with tools to improve productivity and collaboration. Thanks to our partnership with IGEL, we can give near-instant access to ‘ready-to-work’ Tehama Secure Rooms for simple, secure collaboration between remote employees while ensuring regulatory compliance.

Jeff: Let’s talk about that for a moment — why did you want to partner with IGEL?

Jaymes: Why wouldn’t we! Seriously, we’re thrilled to be teaming with IGEL, because the combination of our workspace delivery solutions with IGEL’s software-defined endpoints makes ready-to-work secure rooms possible. The IGEL UD Pocket is absolutely key: an end user can walk up to any 64-bit x86 device, plug the UD Pocket into an available USB port, boot from USB using Secure Boot, and get near-instant access to a Tehama Secure Room.

Jeff: How does the Room concept work?

Jaymes: Amazon WorkSpaces provides secure virtual desktops. Our additional AWS infrastructure services and endpoint software let you create a secure perimeter around those desktops. Rooms live insidethat secure perimeter. They encompass a set of cloud-based tools to help customers speed up and simplify the design, deployment and management of secure workspaces in any on-premises or cloud environment. Rooms leverage automation and deliver proactive cost control through on-demand scaling and support a whole range of functions including file encryption, forensic analysis, auditing and collaboration. Because Tehama is SOC 2 Type II certified, our Rooms ensure data is encrypted at rest and in transit. This kind of security would be really tough for organizations to build on their own because it requires multiple disciplines and both human and technology resources. Tehama provides a readymade solution.

Jeff: Do you use Amazon WorkSpaces for existing IT resources or BYOD?

Jaymes: The key thing always is that you want to make sure sensitive data can’t be left on an endpoint. That means anyendpoint: corporate or BYOD. So we cover both. Amazon WorkSpaces allows for additional services to track and enforce the auditing of endpoint devices to ensure only assigned vendors are using them. Again, IGEL is a crucial partner for creating a trusted endpoint on BYOD solutions with the IGEL UD Pocket.

Jeff: How do you handle scalability in Amazon WorkSpaces?

Jaymes: This is one of the ways we make life even easier for enterprises. With Amazon WorkSpaces, you have your virtual desktops, but provisioning is still manual. The desktops themselves must be either pre-allocated or else you pay up front to grow “on-demand”. Tehama allows for true on-demand configuration and automates the allocation of IT resources, so you’re growing or contracting dynamically in line with what the organization needs. This improves business scalability and eliminates wasteful spending.

Jeff: What about controlling Amazon WorkSpaces sprawl?

Jaymes: When properly aligned with business outcomes, virtual desktops on Amazon WorkSpaces can see huge adoption curves. You can get into situations where the cost of desktops starts to exceed budget because demand is so high. WorkSpaces sprawl occurs when you end up with on-demand infrastructure resources that have been left on when they are not being used. Unless you can identify these systems, a process that can take hours, you’re stuck with unexpected expenses. We’ve designed our solution to reduce or even eliminate these costs. By controlling sprawl, and the related costs, we help eliminate the delays associated with designing and preparing proofs of concept, staging, and upgrades. This “velocity improvement” lets the enterprise serve internal and external line-of-business customers more quickly.

Jeff: How do you facilitate compliance for Amazon WorkSpaces deployments?

Jaymes: Tehama facilitates compliance and data sovereignty by letting customers locate workspaces and sensitive data in the Room or Rooms of their choice while managing multiple locations through a single pane of glass. That helps minimize total cost while meeting local, distributed security and compliance needs. Organizations can deploy our Tehama Gateway in required areas and control the corresponding data, applications and desktop images according to local or regional regulations, compliance specifications and data sovereignty rules. Our Rooms reduce the amount of regionally located management infrastructure, duplicate labor and overall complexity. So you get global assurance with local specificity.

Jeff: What’s your process for working with customers?

Jaymes: We start by asking about their business requirements. Why do they want to move desktops to the cloud? Are they looking to retire their existing virtual desktop infrastructure, or are they expanding for a burst? It’s all about what the business needs. I find some customers “guesstimate” when determining user consolidation ratios on servers or compute resources for AWS. Partners like Liquidware have analytics tools to gain insights into end users and existing desktops, and using tools like these before determining the hardware profile of an in-house solution or compute resources for a cloud solution like Amazon WorkSpaces is imperative.

Jeff: How do you prepare users to access their Amazon WorkSpaces?

Jaymes: The great thing about Amazon WorkSpaces is it provides access to the desktop from many different devices, and the client is deployable to multiple platforms. Configuring and connecting are pretty simple, but when you have various desktops, different authentication methods, and planning requirements, confusion can arise. Vendor and remote worker onboarding can take longer, which increases your time to value. With IGEL including the new Teradici client in their flagship operating system, IGEL OS, you have a terrific alternative for connecting to Amazon WorkSpaces. When combined with Tehama, you get a closed end-to-end system that supports a strong security posture that protects against misconfiguration, tampering via key loggers, and browser infection. And because Tehama has seamlessly integrated its WebUI with the Amazon WorkSpaces implementations of SAML and SCIM from vendors like OKTA, Ping, and Azure AD, we deliver a user experience that ensures effortless access through a secure perimeter from any device using two-factor authentication and one-time passwords.

Jeff: You mentioned time to value. How do you accelerate that?

Jaymes:Tehama with Amazon WorkSpaces improves time to value by about 10 times via easy B2B connectivity tools that ensure fast onboarding of remote workers or new workers, partners, and vendors using our WebUI. And then, as I mentioned, we centralize and optimize workflows across the IT lifecycle to simplify desktop and application delivery to Amazon WorkSpaces.

Jeff: That’s a great overview. Thanks for sitting down with me and talking all this through. I can tell you, everyone at IGEL is looking forward to collaborating on more Amazon WorkSpaces projects.

Jaymes: Thanks to you! We’re very excited about what we can accomplish together.

IT needs to evolve and the growing complexity of the endpoint estate is certainly a driver. Where once IT people were endpoint ‘mechanics’ keeping hardware assets running like a smoothly functioning automobile, IT is now a very different game.  The advent of endpoint software assets and sophisticated workplace analytics, the exponential growth of applications and the rise of the hybrid environment has created a new IT persona: the ‘lab technician’.

IT is still responsible for serving and maintaining the environment, and most importantly for security and compliance.  However, rather than tinkering with assets as one would in a garage, IT now has access to analytics tools giving it end-to-end visibility across the endpoint estate.  The partnership of IGEL and Lakeside is a great example. Gauging productivity at the endpoint has been problematic in the past. Visibility has been limited at best. Now endpoint metrics are available in robust detail due to the combined power of IGEL’s Linux OS endpoints and Lakeside’s SysTrack Workplace Analytics. From a single pane of glass, IT can now use endpoint analytics to assess how much cloud compute to buy, whether the user experience is functioning optimally and whether performance SLAs are being met.

Endpoints Get the Analytics They Deserve

Evolving from mechanics to ‘lab technicians’ is certainly a change in mindset and culture. IT is moving to a higher level of consciousness, if you will, combining the essentials of maintenance and quality control with a deeper level of insight into the endpoint estate and what is needed to work at optimal performance, whether on premises or in the cloud.

IT needs support from the organization to make this change.  A few thoughts:

  • Find a strong advocate. Read any content on culture change and you’ll find this common theme: someone or some team must be willing to go to the front lines and advocate for change. In this case, the change is advancing IT’s role to managing endpoint/workplace analytics and contributing directly to organizational productivity.
  • Answer all the questions. Moving from ‘mechanic’ to ‘lab technician’ should be supported with any product education, training or inquiries that may surface. Companies like Lakeside realize this and offer thorough resources to answer all the questions that come up, and to support easy deployment.
  • Use metrics to everyone’s advantage. When performance improves as a result of metrics supplied by analytics, broadcast this value-add to all stakeholders. IT has always represented the image of a siloed department. Showing how IT’s role in using metrics helps the organization at large and benefits all employees positively raises the overall profile of IT.
  • Actualize the results. As Lakeside says, its SysTrack analytics “places actionable intelligence you can use to build and support productive digital workplaces.” Once an organization has deployed analytics there needs to be an efficient process by which performance issues can be expeditiously fixed. It’s important to show measurable improvements based on these metrics i.e. “do something with the results”.

Think Now and Ahead

Analytics also promotes smart, flexible response to changes in the business environment. IGEL, in combination with Lakeside, for example, can help organizations determine which investments will yield the best productivity dividends by analyzing business usage and need for IT resources.

As workplace computing becomes centered on the endpoint – regardless of device – and IT evolves into analytics driven decision making, a single pane of glass that can serve up the best user experience, and actionable metrics, is the answer to productivity now, and for the future.

Guest Blog: Blair Parkhill, Director of Products at Login VSI

Last week we announced a partnership with IGEL that enables Login PI integration in a radical new way, giving our joint customers the ability to deploy our synthetic user technology to endpoints around the world. (View the announcement here.) What I am amazed by is the simplicity of this solution and the ability to reduce cost by leveraging IGEL software-defined endpoints. Let’s take a quick look at what this means and how it works.

HEALTHCARE USE CASE

First let’s start with a use case. We aren’t limited to healthcare with this solution, but since it is one of our largest markets, let’s just use it as an example. In this scenario we have several clinics that are all operated by the same enterprise, therefore they share an electronic medical record (EMR) system. Typically, these clinics all start with a practice management system, the one the front desk admin uses to get patients checked in and records updated. If this isn’t ready in the morning when doors open, then the practice will see fewer patients, customer experience goes down and so does revenue. In many practices, the doctors try to see as many patients a day as possible.

The office admins will typically show up just before work starts. They’ll fire up their system and get it ready to check in the first patient. But, what if that system isn’t available at that clinic, or what if the practice management interface is extremely slow? Well, this all could have been prevented. By running Login PI Launchers at each of these clinics, the virtual users will consistently login to the desktop, open the application, run queries, update records, etc.… When this happens 24×7, any availability or performance issues will be alerted to the operations team, who can remediate the issue, before the staff starts to show up for work. The same method can be applied to any practitioner workflows as well. You wouldn’t want your doctors or nurses to have to wait for their EMR apps to start up or update, which again reduces the volume of patients which can be seen in a day.

The moral of this story is that you don’t have to wait for your real users to show up to identify an issue. The synthetic virtual user is sensitive to any change in lag or latency at the endpoint and will report any changes in user-experience within the application workflow.

THE BENEFITS OF USING LOGIN PI WITH IGEL

Ease of use

When it comes to performance testing and monitoring, typically there are some steps that need to be followed to setup the solution. Agents, software, databases, servers, network configurations, discovery, etc.… are all common steps in deployment. What is so amazing about this solution with IGEL software-defined endpoints is that you can take one of their thin-clients or an unused laptop (after running their UDC), assign the Login PI profile to it, reboot it, and voila… your Login PI launcher is up and running and reporting metrics back to the virtual appliance about logon success, logon timing, protocol latency, application start times and application interaction times.

Cost

The idea of being able to double-duty an existing end-point at a remote site, or converting a decommissioned piece of hardware to use as a Login PI launcher is phenomenal. With Login PI and IGEL you don’t need a virtual or a physical machine dedicated to the function of being a launcher. This means that there is no additional hardware cost and due to IGEL being completely a Linux based solution, there is no cost to license another Windows instance.

HOW THE SOLUTION WORKS

Without going too far into the weeds, this solution is enabled by a couple different features. The first is the ability for an IGEL end-point to be able to run software from a custom partition. The second is the small amount of Login PI software that sits on this partition and enables the launcher to run. After these two things are done, all you simply do is create a profile and assign it to an end-point. Of course, you’ll need to have the pre-requisites of IGEL UMS, Login PI and the proper licensing. If you want any help or further details on this implementation, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at www.loginvsi.com.

STAY TUNED

There will be much more to come regarding this partnership and the many great ways to use Login PI with IGEL.

FUN FACT

I.G.E.L., the company’s name, is an acronym for a series of German words I cannot understand, but did you know that the word Igel in German means hedgehog? Hence their brilliant logo!

Voting for your favorite IT Baller Testimonial story comes to a close today!

The final story in our IT Baller Finalist series showcases a compelling story in the healthcare market: Diversicare, a Tennessee-based provider of post-acute care facilities.

After acquiring 22 centers already on a Citrix VDI platform, Diversicare wanted to transition to companywide virtualization and move from outdated fat clients to modern endpoints. Its goals were two-fold: to execute a facelift on old equipment without having to spend heavily on new machine investment, and to lower its IT footprint to enable easier acquisition of facilities in the future.

After looking for an endpoint solution that could integrate with Citrix, was turnkey and could enable integration and standardization across all its 76 centers, in 10 states, Diversicare chose IGEL‘sUD Pocket and the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS).

Diversicare is an IT Baller finalist because CIO April Marbury, Shanna Persful, Director of IT Operations, and their team have shown that by using IGEL’s thin clients and centralized endpoint security and optimization they have been able to reduce demands on IT staff. At the same time, they’ve quickly and seamlessly transitioned to a modern, virtualized desktop infrastructure.

Literally overnight, Diversicare can transition a center to modern endpoints by repurposing old hardware with IGEL’s UD Pocket, and then manage all these endpoints with a simple drag and drop interface on the IGEL UMS.  IGEL also provides a secure, consistent user experience for nursing staff accessing Electronic Medical Record systems for patient data.

The end benefit? In the first year of IGEL deployment, Diversicare expects to save more than $600K in hardware refresh and software licensing costs.

“We chose IGEL for its simplicity and support. They delivered on that and much more.”

-April Marbury, CIO Director, Diversicare

The latest in our series of IT Baller testimonial finalists goes along with the spirit of the season: the support Aimar Foundation provides to the Crisis at Christmas project.

Aimar Foundation, a London-based organization that provides technology support to charities, supports Crisis at Christmas, the holiday project of Crisis, the national UK charity that aids the homeless. Over the Christmas period it provides various services to more than 4,000 homeless.

Last year, Aimar Foundation set up an IT network in just two working days, quickly deploying300 IGEL UD3 thin clients to deliver Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops. The IGEL endpoints enable Crisis volunteers to communicate and identify shelter locations for homeless people, as well as allow homeless visitors to communicate with friends and family, seek employment or otherwise improve their situation.

Aimar Foundation was chosen to be an IT Baller finalist because Simon Clark, Aimar Foundation CEO, and the project’s IT teams have proven IGEL’s endpoint solutions are nimble, simple and fast to install. Plus, they are secure and reliably provide support 24 x 7.

Combined with IGEL’s Universal Management Suite (UMS) software, the IGEL UD3 thin clients support nine Crisis at Christmas locations in London, and other locations in the U.K.  The remote management features of the IGEL UMS wind up saving volunteers valuable time, which can be better spent on serving the homeless.  Another benefit is the IGEL UD3’s Skype video conferencing application which provides much needed face-time for the homeless and their families. Lastly, the IGEL UD3’s small form factor enables fast decommissioning and repackaging once the holiday season ends.

“The IGEL thin clients are ideal for Crisis at Christmas because they are simple and fast to set-up using centralised management software, secure because all data is held on central servers and reliable because they have no fan or moving parts.”

-Simon Clark, CEO, Aimar Foundation

For our latest look at the IT Baller Finalist testimonials, consider the story of Toppan Vintage.

Toppan Vintage is the world’s largest printing group with approximately US$14 billion in annual sales.  Toppan acquired Vintage Group in 2017, effectively doubling its size to over 200 staff, and in 2018 acquired Merrill Corporation’s  Capital Markets and Marketing and Communications Solutions (MCS) businesses. The company needed to quickly scale up to integrate new systems and people, and wanted a modern endpoint security and optimization solution that would support its Citrix Virtual Desktops environment.

Toppan Vintage was chosen as an IT Baller finalist because Thomas Mangan and his team are reducing capital costs, increasing operational efficiency and improving their endpoint security and agility. Toppan Vintage has deployed 150 IGEL UD3 multimedia endpoints and is using IGEL’s Cloud Gateway to manage and provide access to endpoints at its branch offices.

Thomas’s staff is using the IGEL UD Pocket to repurpose its laptop computers to run IGEL’s secure Linux OS and give access to Citrix without having to buy new devices.  IGEL is also providing protocol flexibility and a simple, fast install, hallmarks of its revolutionary endpoint solution.  All of the endpoints in Thomas’s environment are being managed by the IGEL UMS, efficiently controlling the devices from a single console and helping Toppan Vintage scale up without having to add IT staff, a sign of a true IT Baller.

The following is a guest blog post from Simon Binder, Microsoft MVP – Enterprise Mobility and Principal Solution Architect, Digital Workplace, ATEA. Simon will be a featured speaker at this year’s European DISRUPT EUC 2019 conference in Munich.

If someone had asked me a few months ago what I would think about a multi-session Windows 10 machine running in the cloud, I would probably have liked the idea. But, since Microsoft seemed to be slowing down the pace in which RDS was being developed and really didn’t wanted to talk much about it, I would have also said it probably won’t happen.

At the same time, Citrix and VMware both have been more innovative and forward looking than ever – with offerings now frequently targeting the cloud.

So, when Microsoft announced Windows Virtual Desktop I first felt a bit confused. Then, it hit me: this is the missing piece!

Today, Microsoft is all about enabling you as a user to choose whichever OS you want on the device where you are most productive. But the thing we haven’t been able to do (with Microsoft 365 that is) is to run our legacy Windows applications on a non-Windows device.

We have been able to do this, of course, running desktop & app virtualization from Microsoft, VMware or Citrix previously. And, some of these vendors have been better than others when it comes to integrating with Microsoft 365. Even so, it’s usually been a rather large investment to get started with any of these solutions, preventing organizations from gaining all the benefits from this kind of desktop & app delivery.

Windows Virtual Desktop could, in a way, be looked at as a solution that democratizes EUC. It may also enable organizations that have started to use, or are looking into using, Microsoft 365 to leverage these solutions fully and even, in some aspects, in a new way compared to how we have previously managed our desktop & app virtualization solutions.

In my session at IGEL’s European DISRUPT EUC 2019 in Munich, I’ll explain what Windows Virtual Desktop is and what it enables you to do – regardless of the size of your organization. I’ll also show how we can integrate the best of Microsoft 365 and IGEL technology with WVD to secure it, manage it and empower your users and your organization to achieve more and create a great user experience!

I hope that you’ll join me and IGEL in January where hundreds of like-minded EUC visionaries will be gathering to discuss the transformation within today’s EUC and how you can better deliver new levels of cost savings, simplicity and protection.

There’s still time to register. Visit https://disrupteuc.com/munich to see the agenda and save your spot for the event that will “Challenge Everything” you know about EUC.

Family owned for three generations, Washington, PA-based Budd Baer Auto is one of the largest car dealerships in its market, selling Buick, GMC, Mazda and Subaru vehicles.  It embarked on a $10 million expansion project to construct two new dealership locations. Around five years ago, the dealership moved away from a traditional desktop PC model by adopting virtual desktop and server virtualization using VMware.  To complete virtualization Budd Baer Auto chose IGEL for its Universal Desktop Converter (UDC) technology and Universal Management Suite (UMS) to refresh and upgrade equipment, to virtually manage five separate sites, and to provide IGEL-OS powered endpoints at the new locations when completed.

Budd Baer Auto was chosen to be an IT Baller finalist because Ryan Kelly and his team are demonstrating many significant benefits of IGEL’s endpoint security and optimization solutions:  IGEL’s UDC software saves organizations money by extending the life of x86-based PC or laptops. Budd Baer Auto used the IGEL UDC to turn existing Windows-based HP laptops and desktops into IGEL OS-powered endpoints.  Budd Baer Auto also simplified IT management and reduced staff time by centrally managing endpoints with IGEL’s UMS console.  Lastly, IGEL has made Budd Baer Auto’s company data far more secure with its Linux OS-powered endpoints and UMS which can lock out unauthorized users.

“We’ve been looking carefully at expenses and what we can do to help the bottom line and make IT less of a cost overhead. Using IGEL’s UDC, management can see more value coming back from all the different technologies we’ve invested in.”

-Ryan Kelly, Network and Systems Administrator, Budd Baer Auto

The Auto Club Group (ACG), the second largest AAA club in North America, serves more than 9 million members across 11 states and two U.S. territories.  Its remote workers in this widespread territory were working with laptop computers that were inefficient and time consuming.  Accessing their desktops and applications was taking too long and security was less than optimum. To improve operations ACG had begun a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) rollout leveraging Citrix XenDesktop. In doing so the ACG team needed to simplify management of its laptop computers and chose IGEL to virtualize its mobile environment.  Using IGEL’s Universal Desktop Converter (UDC) the team converted existing laptops into IGEL Linux OS-powered endpoint devices, managed by IGEL’s Universal Management Suite.

IGEL designated the Auto Club as an IT Baller finalist because James McVicar and his team have demonstrated the IT Baller passion to reduce capital expenditures by refreshing existing hardware equipment, to increase time-to-value and to improve security via IGEL’s highly secure Linux OS.  In a very customer-centric business, the Auto Club remote workers have stepped up their own productivity and customer response with IGEL’s endpoint devices.

“In less than 24 hours we were able to stand up a server, launch the IGEL Universal Management Suite console, and begin managing our fleet of remote endpoint devices. It was that simple.”

~ James McVicar, IT Architect, The Auto Club Group
