Later today Windows 365 (Cloud PC) goes GA; releasing more technology into the cloud. Enabling users to access the latest version of Windows from any device, directly and securely from the cloud, Windows 365 Cloud PC truly enables the work from anywhere ethos. IGEL are pleased to announce launch-day support of Windows 365 Cloud PC using IGEL OS. By using a small, simple, and secure OS on a USB key (UD Pocket),  IGEL’s edge OS solution, combined with IGEL’s universal management suite, ensures just-in-time secure access to Windows 365; without the management and security overhead of running Windows twice (on your device and Windows 365).

Plug in, get to work, unplug, and then play; all with one device on IGEL.

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS

Access a rich Windows desktop experience from either AVD or Windows 365 from a super-secure IGEL OS running on any device.

  • Optimized to connect to Cloud PC
  • Secure read-only OS removes any security concerns at the edge
  • IGEL OS can be installed on any x86-64 device, allowing even older devices to securely connect

Reduce costs, simplify management and enhance security.

  • IGEL OS + Windows 365 / AVD saves money

Ease the transition to AVD or Windows 365 by minimizing capital expenditures, and extending the life of existing hardware; allowing you to postpone, in some cases for years, the cost and disruption of the dreaded PC hardware refresh.

Running Windows 365 removes the worry of DaaS costs, and AVD can save on data center costs too.

  • IGEL OS + Windows 365 /AVD is simple

Easy to use, IGEL features no-touch deployment and drag-and-drop profiling that makes IT administration significantly less time-consuming. IGEL OS can also boot and configure itself via the cloud when rolling out new devices. In addition Windows 365 and AVD is simple to set up, and with Windows 365 even your users can manage their own cloud PC.

  • IGEL OS + Windows 365 /AVD is secure

Data, applications and desktops in the cloud are far easier to secure with Windows 365 and AVD. Coupled with the read-only IGEL OS (which runs on Linux), and IGEL’s “Chain of Trust,” users can have the most secure workspace delivered to any device and to anywhere

The Gratification of a “Servant Heart” Environment

As Sr. Director of Product Marketing at IGEL, I recently passed my 1-year work anniversary. For the company, it has been a great year of tremendous growth as we continue to take market share in end user computing from some of the biggest IT companies on the planet. For me personally, it’s been a year of high activity, continued learning, and great personal fulfilment.

Last year I met Jed Ayres, CMO and CEO of IGEL North America, for lunch in San Francisco with Enit Nichani, who is the VP of Marketing for IGEL North America. What started as merely an exploratory discussion turned into a serious consideration of working for IGEL. Within minutes I was highly impressed with Jed and I already knew that Enit was top-notch after working with her for years at Wyse and then Dell after it had acquired Wyse.

What struck me about Jed, and still does, is that not unlike many Bay Area/Silicon Valley tech CEOs, he’s very driven to succeed while at the same time surprisingly normal (for lack of a better word).  An inspirational leader, nobody works harder or cares more for the company, and he stresses mutual respect and teamwork to all of us. We even have a name for it within IGEL – “servant heart” – which is to be willing to disadvantage yourself to benefit others, be they your teammates at work, our partners, and of course our customers. This approach creates a natural spirit of cooperation and self-sacrifice for the greater cause that has become contagious within the company. For me personally, it’s been extremely gratifying

Multiple decades ago, I was an avid basketball player. Being only 5’9” tall I naturally played the point guard position. I remember getting much greater satisfaction from making a great pass to set up a teammate for any easy shot and score than scoring myself. Working at IGEL in product marketing, where my team and I function as a resource to help sales succeed, has been the closest thing to that in terms of creating the same sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. In fact, doing whatever my team and I can to help others succeed, and in this case at IGEL primarily to help sales crush their numbers, is what I love the most about my job.

As IGEL continues to capture greater market share within end user computing, and as we prove our products to be ideal for simple, secure access to cloud workspaces for enterprises and the likes of AWS and Windows Virtual Desktops via Microsoft Azure, I’m looking forward to the next year being even busier and more challenging as my team and I juggle an ever-growing task list. With all that, I know that for my team and me, I’ll continue to derive great satisfaction from working at a place where future great accomplishments will be shared and enjoyed as a team, but always with a dose of humility. And for that, one word summarizes how I feel about landing here at IGEL:

GRATEFUL.

Why IGEL, Citrix and Microsoft are the Perfect Ingredients for a Tasty Solution

The hunger for a transformation in endpoint computing is growing larger by the day. Limited IT resources and expertise exacerbated by the need for more rapid endpoint provisioning and scalability are mounting to drive more and more organizations to cook up the perfect solution for desktop virtualization. Add to that the attraction of easily integrating Azure-hosted virtual desktops with on-premises Active Directory, and you have a table set that’s ready for a tasty Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) solution.

Yet, like with any good recipe, you need excellent ingredients. And what could be better than IGEL and Citrix? How about IGEL, Citrix and Microsoft?

Citrix + Microsoft = A Perfect Combination Decades in the Making

Citrix and Microsoft have formed a formidable partnership. The depth of their relationship in delivering desktops and apps together in fact goes back more than 30 years. Today, they are building on that history by pivoting to the Microsoft Azure cloud together. And the benefits for customers and partners alike are exponential: elastic scalability, granular control, expansive geographical reach all with more efficient access to popular Office365 apps. As a result, it’s now easier than ever to deliver endpoints with location independence that supports the demands of the growing mobile workforce.

With yesterday’s GA announcement of Citrix Managed Desktops , organizations have a cloud-hosted solution that is easy to provision Windows-based applications and desktops from the cloud to any device, anywhere in a simple unified manner. The new solution provides all the benefits of a traditional Citrix application delivery solution but adds even more simplified deployment and lower cost by using Microsoft Azure cloud services. It’s an exceptional option for extending the value of Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops as well as workspace solutions across the enterprise.

IGEL brings the Full Flavor of Citrix/Microsoft DaaS to Life

Enter the value of IGEL and your Citrix and Microsoft Azure-powered DaaS solution really comes to life. Offering day one support for Citrix Managed Desktops and WVD, IGEL enables organizations to benefit from the speedy deployment enterprises need to match cloud provisioning schedules. But the benefits don’t stop there. Simplified endpoint management, confident endpoint security, dramatic cost savings and support for any cloud, any platform and any device – even those old aging laptops and PCs you thought you’d have to spend a fortune to replace – all add up to the full value you need when making the switch to DaaS.

Also, with Windows 7 end of support roughly 120-days away, and counting, there really isn’t any reason not to put DaaS on the table. With IGEL, Citrix and Microsoft together you’ll be able to quickly provision desktops to any user, scale to meet changing demands, and efficiently deploy and manage workloads across multiple regions – all with the simplified endpoint experience that easy to manage and more secure than ever.

Citrix and IGEL are Already Eating at the Chef’s Table

Both Citrix and IGEL are already seeing each other’s value. In fact, Citrix uses a combination of IGEL UD3 software-defined endpoints along with the IGEL UD Pocket and IGEL Workspace Edition to give new life to old hardware in the Citrix Call Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Through IGEL OS, Citrix has been able to unify all its hardware endpoints at the OS level resulting in significant cost savings, improved end user experience along with greater manageability and security. [read the case study here]

IGEL too relies on a combined IGEL / Citrix solution to support its global user workforce with Citrix-enabled cloud workspaces powered by IGEL OS. The resulting solution delivers the flexible and secure access IGEL employees need to critical applications while enabling ultra-efficient manageability and control.

You can bet that as Citrix Managed Desktops and WVD are fully available, each organization will be adding them to their recipe for DaaS success.

It’s solid proof that DaaS’ time is here. Don’t wait any further. Read about why IGEL OS is revolutionary and then download a demo today.

IGEL for WVD at Microsoft Inspire – and So Much More!

It’s IGEL’s goal to support any cloud, any device, anywhere. And this week, at Microsoft Inspire, we’ll be showcasing how our next-gen edge OS for cloud workspaces is making it easier for customers who want a Linux endpoint to adopt Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD).

The IGEL OS offers a powerful end user computing option for simple, smart and secure workspaces that want to take advantage of WVD’s multi-tenant Windows 10 capabilities or leverage Microsoft’s free Extended Security Updates for Windows 7 to support legacy applications while transitioning to Windows 10.

IGEL is this week announcing a new partnership with CloudJumper which will simplify the deployment and management of cloud workspaces, including WVD delivered on Microsoft Azure. By leveraging the secure and adaptive Linux-based IGEL OS, IGEL and CloudJumper are making it easier to adopt multi-session Windows 10 desktops and applications while working to future-proof today’s cloud-enabled workplaces.

In particular, by combining The CloudJumper Cloud Workspace® Management Suite (CWMS) and IGEL’s Workspace Edition and Enterprise Management Pack software which includes IGEL OS and IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS), enterprises can access a highly optimized Cloud DaaS solution ideal for all types of use cases. You can read the new partner press release here.

It all started with a simple email in late 2018. We exchanged a couple of ideas, followed a by a phone call a few days later. Instantly we were both enthusiastic about the idea: ask various IT communities from all over the world to send us their personal Cloud-related design principles, architectural recommendations, tips, tricks, best and common practices (fun) quotes, and so on, so that we could turn it into a (free) book – a book for the community, by the community.

It’s amazing what we, and with we I mean my partner in crime Christiaan Brinkhoff, myself and all our contributors world-wide, accomplished in just six short months. From the moment we went live to the final submission date, the content kept coming in, an amazing and fun experience for sure.

We’ve said it many times before, but THANK YOU very much for all your help. Never mind if you’ve sent in five words, or 500, it’s all equally appreciated. I know I speak for Christiaan as well when I say that the final result has exceeded most, if not all of our expectations.

Get ready for the launch…

Getting everything ready was hard work (and still is). But the result is something to be very proud of, just wait and see. Next month, June 7th to be precise, our book will be publicly launched during the E2EVC event in Berlin. It’s something we both look forward to, and I’m sure many of you do as well. I don’t want to give away too much… but the book will be well over 300 pages thick, containing more than 125 submissions, including some interesting survey results, quotes and more.

Don’t get me wrong, we still have some ground to cover. As I’m writing this blog post the manuscript is over at the copy editor, which is an impressive task on its own. From this point on we expect to have at least another 25 to 30 hours of work.

We need to go over the edited manuscript and accept, and/or decline any changes and suggestions made. Next to that, we also still have a ‘to do’ list of things to go over and change, or slightly edit.

We’re currently working on finalizing the cover and some other cool items surrounding the project, of which you’ll hopefully see more during E2EVC as well. To keep costs as low as possible we’re trying to do everything ourselves, or at least as much as possible. We make use of Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing services, formerly also known as Amazon CreateSpace and Kindle. In other words, self-publishing.

This gives us more control and relatively low printing costs, but it also means we have to figure out everything on our own, from putting together a cover to figuring out the spin size, the interior design, and more. Luckily I have some experience in this field, which helped save some time here and there.

The book will be available in paperback as well as PDF. During the process we spoke to several people suggesting to support a good cause, a charity of some sort, something we both discussed as well. After a short meeting we decided to just go for it. Here’s what we’ll do…

Digital and paperback

The digital version of our book will be a 100% free of charge. The paperback version will cost a few Euro’s, Dollars, of whatever currency you are used to. But that’s only because books are not printed for free. There’s manual labor involved, paper, carton, ink, and so on. However, because we design and create everything ourselves costs will be low. Or at least as low as possible.

The good cause

The idea is to put 1, 5 or 2 Dollars/Euro’s on top of the final list-price, which we will donate to One Laptop Per Child – read more here. It goes without saying that we will personally donate a (certain) amount as well.

Hopefully, many of you are interested in ordering a paperback copy as well, next to the free digital version that will become available later on. The information shared in the book will be valuable to everyone working with Cloud solutions/services or is thinking about doing so.

Book give away

During the launch event at E2EVC Berlin we’ll be giving away a couple of copies. We are currently thinking about how to go about this, though we think Kahoot might be involved.  Furthermore, the book will be available through all Amazon online book stores. We don’t have a final list price just yet, but it won’t be more than 10 dollars/euros, or close to it.

The digital version will be released one to two months later, and will be a 100% free of charge. Once the paperback version is publicly available, we’ll start working on the digital version and keep everyone updated on our progress.

That’s about it. It has been an amazing ride so far, and still is. We are very much looking forward to getting it out there in June, to share with you, what you all shared with us! Last but most certainly not least, we would also like thank IGEL for being one of our book sponsors, this would have not been possible without your help.

Keep an eye on www.projectbytesized.com and make sure to follow us over at @ProByteSized on Twitter – we have a whole lot more in store going forward.

If you are planning on attending E2EVS Berlin on June 7th, and I know IGEL is, be sure to come to our session and hopefully pick up a copy. See you there!

Cheers, Bas and Christiaan.

You hear it constantly: the cloud is changing everything. Yes, it’s changing file storage and sharing, application development and hosting, data protection and disaster recovery processes and business intelligence for digital transformation. But, endpoint computing too? You bet.

Just to recap some key cloud statistics, IDC estimates that 60% of infrastructure spending will be on public or private cloud by 2022. This contrasts with 46% in 2017. That’s because of the clear advantages offered by a cloud-centric infrastructure, including the ability to lower hardware costs, reduce maintenance requirements, better optimize workloads, and enhance user productivity through the reliable access to cloud-native applications. These benefits are just as valuable at the endpoint as they are in the datacenter.

Linux endpoint OS IGEL IDC

Changing Endpoint Economics

A recently published IDC InfoBrief, “Linux and the Endpoint security and optimization Market,” states that “global cloud infrastructure expansion is driving growth in underlying endpoint hardware and software that facilitates cloud access in reliable and secure ways.”

So, what’s that mean? Cloud adoption is changing the status quo of end user computing (EUC). Rather than Windows PCs, endpoints and repurposed endpoint devices are the go-to for organizations looking to take advantage of virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and desktop-as-a-service (DaaS) workspaces.  (IGEL is having considerable success converting older devices to endpoints with our conversion software.) In doing so, enterprises are capitalizing on the value of the cloud, without heavy hardware spend or forklift upgrade procurement costs.

Simplifying Management Complexity

Not only is the cloud dramatically changing the economics of EUC, it’s also making endpoint computing more manageable and secure. That may seem counterintuitive. With users now roaming, working from everywhere using the cloud, it can be difficult for IT to enact comprehensive policy control and remote support. It can be a complex puzzle that has many companies limiting user behavior, and their productivity, to assure compliance and data security.

But, not for users of the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS). UMS users have one integrated, low touch system for universal endpoint security and optimization that supports almost any virtual desktop deployment architecture – including the cloud. This means that it’s easier than ever to capitalize on cloud benefits without sacrificing manageability. Something we’re certain will further fuel VDI and DaaS adoption.

The Rise of Linux at the Desktop

Cloud adoption is changing one more thing at the desktop: the operating system of choice. Windows is quickly losing ground. In fact, while Windows remains flat in terms of endpoint OS market share – 39% in 2015 and 2017 – Linux-based endpoint devices have grown 8% between 2015 and 2017 to 35%. That makes Linux the only endpoint OS that’s growing at a global level. And, the cloud has a lot to do with it.

Why? Most major cloud platforms are Linux-based. IDC says that’s “giving the OS a strong base for momentum in cloud environments.” And the Linux trend hasn’t gone unnoticed by major global vendors including Microsoft, Intel and others. You can read more about that in my blog “Why Linux will Rule the World.”

Overcoming the Cloud Security Hurdle

Finally, one more way cloud growth is changing endpoint computing is when it comes to security. A recent report by Gartner said that cloud computing ranks as the top risk concern for executives in risk, audit, finance and compliance. However, leaning on the two technologies outline above, a Linux-based OS and unified endpoint security and optimization, IGEL is enabling IT to overcome the cloud security hurdle. Read my blog “Security: The Key to End User Computing Fulfilling on its Promise.” Here I outline the five ways the IGEL OS enhances the security of EUC – whether on-premises or delivered in the cloud – including the use of embedded protection against viruses and malware through a Linux-based OS that is virtually impossible to manipulate or breach. The security advantages of using a Linux-based OS for the endpoint will continue to propel its use in cloud-enabled infrastructures in combination with enhanced manageability and lower cost.

The cloud will continue to change the landscape of today’s IT – with the endpoint being one of its latest transformations. At IGEL, it’s been something we’ve anticipated for some time. As a result, you can bet that we’ll be at the leading-edge of innovation for cloud-enabled EUC with new features that will make it increasingly more viable, while continuing to lower costs, improve manageability and bulletproof security along the way.

Hospitals are always slightly unnerving places, so it is a nice surprise to see old acquaintances while journeying through the healthcare system.

My trip involved just a small elective procedure, so was not exactly life threatening, but with the thought of needles, monitors stuck to one’s torso, harsh artificial lights and, in true Monty Python-esque fashion, lots of “machines that go ‘ping!’, there’s still plenty to be mildly concerned about. Plus of course the fact it was 2pm, and I hadn’t eaten since my meagre piece of toast and black coffee at 6am…

As I lay on a gurney, wearing a paper hat and one of those gowns that for some reason leaves your backside exposed, I was wheeled into a waiting-room directly outside the operating theatre. Left to my own devices while the sound of clinicians and nurses prepping for the operation echoed from the room next door, I looked around.

To my immediate right, there was a monitor.

On that monitor was a very familiar logo, announcing to the world (well, to the poor fool on the operating gurney anyway) that this hospital’s end-points were part of an IGEL cloud-based operating solution.

Hooray! I was in safe hands…surrounded by old friends!

The logo also featured regular IGEL partners-in-crime Imprivata, which suggested that IGEL and Imprivata were working in tandem on a secure, single-sign-on (SSO) solution for accessing virtual endpoints.

The endpoint itself gave me slightly less confidence. On closer inspection, it appeared to be a very old Dell PC, still bearing a Windows Vista sticker, which suggests it was around a decade past its best. On the flip side, this highlights the fact that converting legacy devices to run on the IGEL OS really DOES extend their working life far beyond normal barriers. Which, in even more positive fashion, means I haven’t been lying in all those articles and blog posts I’ve written over the years. Still, it really did look very old and dusty…

Eventually, a friendly nurse came in, and asked me the same questions I’d already been asked several times. As she began to put monitors and sticky tape on my person, and tick charts and other official-looking stuff, I thought to ask her about the IGEL/Imprivata solution.

“Looks like a pretty cool endpoint solution you’ve got there,” said I.

“Er, what sorry?” Said she.

“Your computers. I do some work for the companies that make it easy to access your workflows, using that little wrist band on your arm,” I continued. (They had an access control solution attached to each terminal for faster, secure access).

“Oh that! Yes, it has really changed our lives, I love it. So much better than the last place I worked in,” she enthused.

A big tick for IGEL in the Australian healthcare system!

I began to give the nurse a quick rundown on what IGEL’s OS brings to the hospital as part of their technology stack. Indeed, I would have spoken more about the ways of IGEL and enhancing the user experience, but at this point another clinician came into the room and proceeded to render me unconscious, which I choose not to associate with my fascinating discourse on cloud computing in the healthcare system.

Anyway, it all ended up fine, a couple of days off my feet and I am back to writing content and managing media relations for the world’s most dynamic VDI company. I consider myself lucky to live in a country where healthcare is relatively affordable, efficient and very safe. I am equally lucky to have seen IGEL in action, at least for a very short while, and to have heard first-hand, from someone with no vested interest in the system other than their own personal experience, that it works bloody well for them!

IGEL UD Pocket for Mac HandIGEL’s UDP has been out for some months now, and is starting to catch on as a very fast, smart way of connecting remote staff to a central cloud network. The UDP offers a dual-boot system that turns compatible, USB-bootable form factors into an IGEL Linux 10-powered endpoint, without overwriting the local OS. This is especially useful for remote staff who need to be connected to a virtual desktop environment back at HQ, as it can be achieved with absolutely no technical training. The small form-factor UD Pocket plugs into an available USB port on the device to be connected, and literally takes care of the whole process automatically.

IT staff can connect remote workers to a virtual network, either individually or as a group. Staff will have immediate access to the same applications and resources as their colleagues back in HQ, as well as a device that is remotely manageable. That includes security patches, upgrades for all supported software, plug-ins and applications. Devices that run as part of the virtual network convert to run as endpoints, and have many of the attendant benefits. Boot up times are improved – in some cases reducing from as long as thirty seconds, down to seven or eight. Access to applications in the cloud is fast, and workflows can follow the individual as they move around – log onto a device in the network using a secure credential, and the ‘live’ workflow boots up within seconds, at the exact point where the staff member left it.

The IGEL UD Pocket is a valuable tool for keeping remote workers connected to a virtual network solutions, giving them fast, secure and easily manageable access to devices and applications.
