It was a great experience bringing The Attic on the road and getting a chance to visit with Mike Strohl at our DISRUPT event in Newport Beach. Mike is CEO of e360, (formerly Entisys), a highly respected tech reseller and solution provider founded by his family three decades ago. Mike takes us through the company’s early days doing PC training, forward to its prominence today as a powerhouse in the EUC space.

Although e360 was founded by his dad, George Strohl, Mike did not follow the logical path from school directly to the family business. A San Francisco native, Mike majored in international marketing at San Francisco State, and having worked for UPS during college, wanted to join their corporate marketing team. Mike, however, offered a little too much unsolicited plans on what his next UPS job should be and was sent to the Siberian overnight schedule. It was fortuitous. After his shift, he spent the day working with his dad, getting a feel for the business. Sadly, his dad passed on just months after Mike officially joined the company. He and his brother Matt, along with his stepmother Bets, decided to continue building the business. At Citrix events they met Agile360, a company in a similar space, which they acquired in 2008. This, along with a series of other acquisitions has elevated e360 to becoming a leading provider of security, cloud, automation, digital workplace, and Microsoft solutions.

While Mike wasn’t much for traditional team sports growing up, there’s no question he’s at the top of his game today, leading an organization of almost 300 people and winning dozens of industry accolades for superior partnerships. From focusing on providing existing solutions, e360 is now also working with VCs and investors to create market briefings and work with customers to innovate products and get ahead of trends.

One influence Mike believes is only getting bigger is putting cybersecurity at the center of any EUC or data center build. Changing rules around privacy, security and compliance regulations, and companies’ need for help in finding a solution, opens the door for e360 to consult on the best cyber strategy.

Partnering with industry allies or with customers is at the heart of Mike’s approach to business. He shares this belief with IGEL, in companies partnering in the trenches together to build a better world and using technology to do it. Both companies continue to work together as partners in delivering EUC solutions.

Tune in and hear Mike talk about the changing dynamics in the cloud workspace market and how companies are retooling to become cloud-centric innovators. Also, find out what school course Mike failed. You’ll be surprised!

On Why Google is Great. “…what they’re doing around partner engagement, opportunities, business development, investment… they’re a great innovative partner.”

On Success Ingredients. “… success really comes with people that can execute. It doesn’t mean take technology X out and put technology Y in.”

On Effective Partnering. “In this business if you’re worried about competition then there’s something wrong with what you’re doing. …Customers’ requirements are changing now at an unprecedented rate…so if you don’t have your networking community, you have no chance of success.” Mike Strohl

We recently had the pleasure of talking with Skip Gumble on The Attic during our DISRUPT tour. Skip is Horizon Cloud Services Senior Director at VMware and has global responsibility for driving the end user computing business including virtual applications and desktops. Skip reveals how he started out in sales and systems engineering hardware positions and then saw software and EUC as the future, eventually joining VMware, where he is celebrating his tenth anniversary.

Long before ‘arm’ became a tech word, Skip had an arm, a good one, that made him a stellar third baseman and pitcher at Lovett High School in his hometown of Atlanta. Lovett was serendipitous. They offered an independent study type program during his sophomore year, and Skip chose computer technology. He was able to tinker with the HP 2000 and soon he and a friend realized the computer had no programs. They started writing software and wrote the accounts receivable and payable systems for the school. Skip earned money doing software through high school and used the money to help pay for tuition at Southern Methodist University. He graduated with degrees in computer science and business, earning money in a work-study program with Data General.

Skip began his post-college career at HP where he got the first hint of what end user computing would be today. HP was selling transactional based systems and dealing with end users needing access to information. He then moved to 3Com, and after a total 20 years in hardware he was ready to move back to software.

IGEL and Skip began their friendship and EUC alliance, circa 2008, when he was doing a brief stint at Citrix before spending one year at Dell, then moving to VMware. Good fortune struck when Susan Nash, a former HP colleague, invited Skip to join their VDI and Horizon team at VMware.

Skip says one of the best things about VMware and IGEL’s partnership is both are very focused on driving innovation to help their customers. He sees perfect synergy with VMware in IGEL software’s ability to help the customer gain access anywhere on any device.

Tune in and hear Skip talk about VMware’s merger with Broadcom and how he views the merging working, as well as his take on end user computing’s continued evolution. And discover what Skip’s mom learned about him during the pandemic!

On Why In-Person Still Matters. “…it’s really important to reconnect with everybody in person. …the amount of information and dialog that we can now have with our customers is so much more rich than we could ever have on Zoom.”

On Nurturing Collaboration. “One of the goals we have as a team is to get together in fun places every six months or so. …It is important to go in the office and have a collaboration session. When I go into corporate they schedule meetings with each other as well with me. So, I’m a catalyst to get people to come back and collaborate.”

On End User Compute. “…end user computing, the digital transformation, our customers need our help to get to the next level. Their employees need our help for (their) experience or their customer experience. …If you, as employers of people using technology that entices people to come work for you, that benefits you in a great way.”   Skip Gumble

At the DISRUPT conference in Newport Beach, California, we sat down with Scott Manchester, Director of Program Management, Windows 365, Microsoft, for an amazing journey into Scott’s career starting out as a home automation entrepreneur, then leading Microsoft innovation from Windows 7 through Windows 365. Ever creative, he is already developing new Windows 365 products and other ways Microsoft can support virtualization and the future of end user computing.

The right timing is a theme in Scott’s life. He grew up in the Seattle area, graduated from the University of Washington, and earned his MBA from Washington State University. Out of college, his first job was working for Microsoft co-founder, the late Paul Allen. Scott did technical projects for Allen’s various estates, properties, and yachts, largely in the home automation space. He took that expertise and built his home automation company, of which 90% of the clients were Microsoft people. After a while, he decided it was time to do something different, and wanted to work for Bill Gates. It was the only job he applied for. In 2001 he joined Microsoft.

Over the last 21 years, Scott has been front and center at a dazzling number of milestone innovations at Microsoft, acting as a serial entrepreneur within the company. He holds 15 patents, including his work in Wi-Fi protected setup, formerly called Windows Connect Now. He then moved into media, media streaming and media management, and led the development of the media technologies in Windows 7 and Windows 8, and from there got into the second screen remoting, gaming, and virtualization space.

Scott and IGEL sealed their virtualization alliance over breakfast at a Seattle IHOP. IGEL learned that Scott was working on something that would revolutionize end user computing. He did, and the result is AVD. Being entrepreneurial, Scott knew there was more to do to broaden the utility of AVD. He spent several years with his team developing Windows 365 as a layer over AVD, to provide a full SaaS-based solution that allows customers to manage that environment the same way they manage physical devices.

IGEL and Windows 365 were a natural EUC fit, joining IGEL’s Linux OS with Microsoft’s OS. IGEL early on developed some of the first dedicated AVD endpoint devices, using its in-depth expertise and impressing Microsoft with its progress and customer value. A high point was IGEL CEO Jed Ayres joining Scott on stage at Ignite 2019 to discuss IGEL, Linux OS and its partnership to support AVD.

Tune in and hear Scott talk about Microsoft’s continuing partnership with IGEL and new Microsoft developments underway in which physical and virtual computing will blend even more. And find out how your smartphone owes some innovative technology to Scott!

On Windows 365 Development during COVID. “…we built the product all working remote… so no better way to build a product …you know, it’s like building the car while you’re driving it, right? You know immediately what you need.”

On How his Martial Arts Experience defines a Good Partnership. “We call it flow rolling, where you’re just moving, and letting them get moves, and you get moves, …though that instinct to fight and win comes out sometimes. So, you really have to put yourself in the right headspace to make sure that it’s a great experience for both parties, and I think that’s a basis for any good partnership.”

On Changing the Consumer Device Mindset. “…You see so many of these new services coming out now that offer ways of accessing entertainment, streamed to you. Those are setting people’s mindset that I don’t have to own something or physically touch something to be able to consume or be immersed in that experience…and virtualization is basically taking your PC experience and giving you a Netflix like experience…”  Scott Manchester

Our latest one-to-one chat with Tarkan Maner, EUC executive, entrepreneur, and currently, Chief Commercial Officer of Nutanix, is a welcome first: our first in-person guest in the Attic since the pandemic! Tarkan has been front and center to milestones in the evolution of EUC and the cloud, as CEO of Wyse when it was sold to Dell, and as CEO of Nexenta, a leader in AI and multi-cloud data management. Tarkan has tons of insight into transitioning companies to the next level and why Microsoft has an unbeatable position in our remote future.

Tarkan began innovating new products and apps at the age of 15 when he and his friends developed the first pre-online version of what would be a combination of Google maps and Trip Advisor today.  They sold the map to Istanbul restaurants and hotels to businesses who could put their logo on them, and Tarkan’s entrepreneurial journey began. Born in Ankara, Turkey, he spent part of his youth in Germany due to his dad’s electrical engineering career. Fluent in Turkish, German, French and English, he earned degrees in industrial engineering management, an M.B.A., as well as credentials from Harvard’s advanced management program.

He joined Computer Associates, taking on a number of roles for founder Charles Wang, and then CEO Sanjay Kumar, developing expertise in product management and business development. While representing the company in Asia he met the founders of Wyse. The company at the time was in financial distress. Tarkan moved to Wyse and was instrumental in turning the company around and rebuilding its business. In 2012 Dell completed its acquisition of Wyse, renaming the company Dell Wyse.

Tarkan and IGEL agree that the hybrid environment opens up new opportunities for EUC innovation, and that Nutanix’s approach to closer collaboration with cloud providers is the right strategy for companies wanting to increase market opportunities in the EUC, VDI and cloud space.

Tune in and hear Tarkan talk about where Microsoft and IGEL fit in the hybrid environment of the future. And you’ll never guess what Tarkan did to earn money as a student when he first came to the U.S.!

On Wyse Zero Clients. “Cheaper was not the differentiator. It was complete control and secure computing, that you can control and manage users…and provide ultimate security with no attack surface.”

On Recruiting Talent. “To attract people, you need to give them the autonomy, the environment where they can learn and excel…we treat every employee as a partner and CEO in their own right.”

On Product Management. “Companies sometimes fail because they don’t pay attention to product management. Great engineers cannot achieve great goals unless the right product management is established….Product managers run a business.”

On the Channel. “There is a myth that the channel is dead…it is never going to be dead because we cannot do this alone as vendors…the key differentiator to succeed in the channel is to be authentic…to walk the walk.”

On EUC’s Future. “EUC and EUC as a service in a hybrid world is going to be a bigger opportunity…The pandemic showed us you need to be careful about security control and remote life.”

Our latest one-to-one chat with Christiaan Brinkhoff, Principal Product Manager and Community Lead, Microsoft Windows 365 Cloud PC, is a milestone in our evolving Attic video series:  unlike many of the veteran experts we’ve had on the show, Christiaan is a young, rising star and the first whose life has been entirely connected to a cell phone. He is one of Microsoft’s most dynamic evangelists for Windows in the cloud and a key influencer, blogger, author, and in-demand speaker. EUC is in the midst of a wave of innovation so it’s great to have on someone with Christiaan’s perspectives.

Christiaan became interested in computing around the age of 12 when he took apart his first PC, a Pentium 3, swapping it out for a cooler one with a transparent LED side panel. As a 14-year-old entrepreneur he built websites, then owned a computer service shop. With degrees in computer science and IT management, Christiaan later worked for an MSP, and as a consultant, focusing on Citrix and VMware. It sparked his career long passion for cloud and desktop virtualization.

His cloud experience prompted an offer from FSLogix which was developing Cloud Cache. Christiaan was hired as a technical evangelist and cloud solutions architect, leveraging his community visibility in the VDI space to introduce the product to a global audience. When FSLogix was sold to Microsoft in 2020, Christiaan moved with the team to Microsoft, and initially focused on helping integrate and educate the Microsoft teams and customers on FSLogix. Now, as part of the Windows 365 engineering team he is wearing two hats, shipping Windows product features and sharing tips and ideas to help evangelize the Windows 365 community mindset.

Christiaan and IGEL share a deep belief in moving Windows to the cloud and the value of Linux in facilitating Windows 365 Cloud PC. Tune in and hear Christiaan talk about the impact Windows 365 is making in the EUC community. Having re-located from the Netherlands to Redmond, Christiaan also has a fun story to tell about his newborn child’s passport.

On Cloud Computing. “The future is connecting to a cloud PC environment as the need to have your resources locally becomes less relevant. Cloud PCs run in the cloud so you can [scale] by purchasing another license and pay for that time. Some Windows 365 early adopters are spinning up 3,000 to 4,000 cloud PCs in a day.”

On Hardware Limitations: “Over the last 30 years you always had to purchase a new laptop to do that [EUC]. That flexibility that you get from the cloud right now is really game changing.”

On Microsoft Culture: “People from the outside think that Microsoft is the complete opposite of a startup but Microsoft has a community, and as well, a startup kind of mindset. Even in a big company like Microsoft you can still be a smaller team and create a startup culture.”

Be sure to check out the latest Attic one-to-one chat with Sanjay Poonen, an EUC superstar who led the development of VMware’s EUC business when virtual desktops were hardly a household phrase. Sanjay shares his fascinating journey, growing up in Bangalore, India, traveling 10,000 miles to study computer science at Dartmouth College, a journey that would eventually see him rise to great heights in the EUC world.

Sanjay – never a status quo believer – sought opportunities with companies beginning to innovate disruptive products and technology. He began as an engineer at Apple in the early days of Mac development, helped develop startup Alphablox (analytic applications) acquired by IBM; then spent eight years at SAP, as president of its platform, applications, and industries group, expanding SAP beyond its original ERP model.

Sanjay became an EUC icon after leaving SAP in 2013 and joining VMware to build its EUC business, recruiting the best of the best from Citrix, MobileIron and others to map the future in virtualization and deliver the tools to make EUC a viable choice for enterprises. Always a disruptor, Sanjay shook up the industry in 2014 with VMware’s acquisition of AirWatch, an enterprise mobile management and security provider. The $1.5 billion price tag was a startling number at that time.

IGEL and Sanjay have been strategic allies for more than a decade, as the two companies have had a common goal of growing the EUC business and delivering the best, most secure cloud workspace experience to enterprises and their end users. Tune in and hear Sanjay talk about the next wave of EUC innovation, why security is paramount and his new adventures.

On Security’s Future: “The next frontier is protecting source code…. developer security and understanding the vulnerabilities…. i.e. code used in early detection to detect disease as opposed to reacting later.”

On Breach Concerns: “It’s certainly a boardroom topic, as having economic impact when there’s a breach. But imagine a scenario very similar to what happened in Bopal in the 1980s. That type of incident could happen again through a hack. It’s not just economic impact, it’s lives too.”

On EUC Growth: “Work from anywhere is just starting to take off in a whole new way. End user computing is hot again. If you’re in sales you’re still going to be selling to the same buyers. They haven’t gone away..but they’re not just buying VDI now. They’re buying many other tools.” – Sanjay Poonen

Be sure to check out the latest Attic one-to-one chat with Nabeel Youakim, whose career spans tech history milestones in end user computing and cloud migration. Nabeel shares a key factor any successful partnership must have and his insights into turning around problem relationships.

IGEL continues its exploration and celebration of origin stories in Episode 5 of “The Attic” video podcast featuring a conversation with sales and business development wizard Nabeel Youakim. Nabeel led Microsoft’s early expansion into Asia-Pac, then went on to become Citrix’s employee #350. Over 22 years at Citrix he was a major force in building alliances with Microsoft and the partner ecosystem and launching Citrix’s cloud platform. Tune in and hear Nabeel recount a time when it wasn’t clear if Microsoft was going to squash Citrix, a time when Citrix almost went under.

Now, some 18 years later, Nabeel is ahead of the curve again, as Chief Development Officer at Tehama, where he is leading the next level of VDI in ‘virtual rooms.’ In fact, it was at an IGEL virtual event that he met Tehama executives! Now, Nabeel does it all: business development, building the partner ecosystem and the IGEL Ready partner alliance.

On Building Alliances. “To work with a much bigger partner like Microsoft you have to be patient and understand there are many components…It’s not just the engineering team. There’s a corporate team, a field team. You need to engage with each team to make sure your message is understood [and relates] to their objectives.”

On Reseller Importance: “Mark Templeton at Citrix set up the culture that no one company could sell all the components. You really needed a reseller to put them all together and sell them as a solution…Mark came from the partner side and understood that very well.”

On the logic of EUC: “For years our community has worked to build the whole VDI and DaaS environment. For a long time we used the MAPS acronym:  management, access, performance and security. The end user computing paradigm solves all these very well.”

Nabeel Youakim

Listen in and find out what rough-and-ready sport Nabeel excelled at. It’s a good foundation for surviving the tech industry!

Be sure to check out this conversation with veteran entrepreneur Kevin Goodman, a great sage on what it takes to make a product successful and how no one can go it alone during the sleepless nights and occasional hiccups of a software startup.

IGEL continues its exploration and celebration of origin stories in Episode 4 of “The Attic” video podcast. The series gives a nod to IGEL’s founding 20 years ago in a small attic in Bremen, Germany by sharing the stories of tech experts and thought leaders across the end user computing (EUC) industry.

This fourth episode features a conversation with software innovator Kevin Goodman. Kevin helped create some of the early products in end user computing, selling one of his successful ventures, RTO Software to VMWare in 2010, and a second, FSLogix, to Microsoft in 2018. Currently, he is working on a mystery project at Amazon which will no doubt be another market-moving venture when public.

Kevin Goodman never wanted to make computers his career. Math was his passion but at the University of Georgia he aced a Fortran course and never looked back. After college, in 1995, working as a coder, he had a chance serendipitous conversation with former Citrix CEO Mark Templeton who introduced him to Citrix and EUC.  He learned about putting a Citrix client on a server rather than putting an application (Lotus Notes) on a back-office server. It eliminated tedious updates and you could say it was one of the first conversations about EUC!

EUC Predictions. “We have a name for it now, the work-from-home industry. 2020 showed enterprises that work from home is legitimate…It will be a hybrid situation, maybe a couple of days at home and a couple of days in the office. Desktop growth will continue, maybe not at the rate of 2020, but for the next several years at least.”

Customer approach. “I didn’t know to call it customer obsession at FSLogix but that’s what we had and that’s why we succeeded. It is the first leadership principle at Amazon… Customer obsession serves you well over time.”

The value of partnerships. “Customers sometimes don’t know which way to go. And let’s face it, if they buy the wrong product it could be their career on the line, so they reach out to people they do trust to say ‘hey is this real?’ Having those partners stand up and say something nice about you and having software that works and the metrics that allow you to prove it to the customer, then it becomes very synergistic at that point.”  – Kevin Goodman

Kevin also talks about his very short ‘retirement,’ why he went to Amazon instead of starting a company this time around, and what is the answer he is looking for when he asks new entrepreneurs about their motivation.

You won’t want to miss this chat with Tyler “T-Rex” Rohrer. From tourist rickshaws to trolleys to his early days at VMware, T-Rex’s path is a great lesson in breaking rules and letting curiosity lead the way. Hear why he founded Liquidware.

IGEL continues its exploration and celebration of origin stories in Episode 3 of “The Attic” video podcast. The series gives a nod to IGEL’s founding 20 years ago in a small attic in Bremen, Germany by sharing the stories of tech experts and thought leaders across the end user computing (EUC) industry.

This third episode features a conversation with serial entrepreneur and VDI champion Tyler “T-Rex” Rohrer. T-Rex is an expert on digital workspace tech, a popular speaker and a co-founder of Liquidware, after a key role at VMware’s Enterprise Desktop team.

For T-Rex, the entrepreneurial bug struck early. He was still in his teens when he started a business renting rickshaws to take tourists around Portsmouth, Maine, upgraded to trolleys,  sold them to became a stockbroker, met a computer reseller, went into tech sales, met VMware’s early team and started FOEDUS, later acquired by VMware. After working with Jerry Chen, who coined the phrase VDI, T-Rex founded Liquidware to support Windows adaptive workspace management solutions.

After COVID “The sleeves are rolled up and people are going to get serious about re-architecting…The next 18 months are going to be a renaissance, a reimagining of end user computing. From the edge to the cloud to the data center, that triangle is going to be figured out…Collaborative solutions like Zoom or Teams are going to be integrated in new and exciting ways…”

When was the year of VDI? “It really did start with Microsoft and WVD as kind of a tectonic shift…reimagining Windows and it was now completely fine to consume it in a new way….to think about it as being cloud-centric…..the second part is what IGEL and I are in the business of…rich and robust tactile local processing…meeting the potential of cloud services…”

What’s next in EUC? “We all agree it is going to be some type of hybrid workplace moving forward…part of scaling up is simplifying the onboarding and consumption so it is easy for the consumer…that’s really the next evolution.” –Tyler Rohrer

T-Rex also talks about his natural curiosity in all things, not getting hung up on rules and believing anything is possible. And because you want to know… Tyler reveals how he got his nickname!

Back in the 1980’s, there was a focused effort to stop the environmental impact of pollution caused by litter and other harmful pollutants damaging our air quality and water. The public service announcement proclaimed: “People Start Pollution, People Can Stop It.” Little did we know then how relevant this slogan would be for the massive volume of e-waste now damaging our environment.

The UN is calling it the “Tsunami of E-Waste”. It’s the world’s fasted growing waste stream and is becoming a significant global environmental issue. Whether piled in the landfill or incinerated, improperly processed e-waste causes significant health risks to humans, as well as the environment around use, as dangerous toxins are released.

Consider that, according to Statista, 54 million metric tons (Mt) of e-waste was produced worldwide in 2019. To provide a sense of scale, 50 Mt is equivalent to 4,500 Eiffel towers – enough to cover an area the size or Manhattan (Global E-waste Monitor,2020). Small IT and telecommunications equipment make up 9% of the total amount of e-waste produced. Screen and monitor devices which include laptops make up 12% of all e-waste produced. The rest of e-waste produced is made up of large appliances such as air-conditioning units and washing machines, and small equipment such as cameras and toasters.

“While e-waste is a huge problem that spans multiple industries and complex products, businesses can do their part by incorporating circular economy solutions into their IT strategy,” says Brent Smiley, VP ITAD programs of Green4Good.

Less than 20% of global e-waste is responsibly managed. Irresponsibly managed e-waste is often shipped overseas where they are likely dumped, traded, or processed in an unregulated way contributing to environmental and health issues. The amount of e-waste produced per person in the US was 19.4kg in 2016. This number is likely higher in 2021 as devices are designed to be obsolete while we continue to increase the number of technology-based devices we have. In all, our end user computing impact on e-waste is significant… and IGEL is looking to help change that.

IGEL for a Cleaner, Greener World

Yes, there’s no denying that e-waste is an unavoidable byproduct of technology innovation. As organizations embrace new technology in pursuit of increased productivity, e-waste will result. But IGEL believes that with proper focus and diligence this e-waste can be reduced.

This is exactly why we’ve engaged with Green4Good. Green4Good helps organizations securely and responsibly dispose of their IT assets by converting assets into social good and environmental action.  To date, they’ve diverted more than 1,800,000 IT assets from landfills through leveraging a reuse model that gives devices a second life.

Green4Good also helps organizations get closer to reaching their carbon reduction goals. The program is the first in the world to generate verified carbon credits through the refurbishment and resale of corporate IT assets.

It’s the perfect recipe for circular End-of-First-Life™ Technology management that can have a significant positive effect for our environment.

In addition to partnering with Green4Good, IGEL further supports a cleaner, greener world by doing the following:

  • Extending the PC Lifespan. IGEL OS extends the life of existing end user computing equipment by three to five years. By converting aging systems with IGEL OS, they become efficient cloud workspaces without investing in new systems – reducing the environmental impact of producing new devices while reducing e-waste through extending system life.
  • Lowering Power Consumption. IGEL-powered endpoints consume less power. By connecting to the cloud for processing the endpoint is much more power-efficient, further reducing environmental drain.
  • Enabling Remote Work. IGEL powers the new agile work movement, where users can work from anywhere they want. This simplifies and secures working from home so end users can reduce their carbon footprint by minimizing travel days into the office.

Get Carbon Neutral. Join the Green4Good Movement.

The Green4Good program is an effective way to solve end-of-life IT asset disposition challenges, while donating cash and new technology to charity. To date, the program has raised over $3.3 million dollars and is supporting over 195 different charitable organizations from around the world.

When hardware is contributed to the Green4Good program – 90% of collected technology is securely remarketed for reuse while the remainder is responsibly recycled. That’s right, none of it goes into the landfill. Green4Good focuses on reuse first as it produces less waste and pollution when compared to recycling. And when you trade-in your unused hardware and equipment you can earn cash and carbon credits for end-of-life assets with the unique ability to offset your new purchases of IT equipment and make them carbon neutral.
