Today, end user computing (EUC) just got more flexible and even more secure. IGEL is now shipping the new COSMOS endpoint platform which enables secure, efficient, managed access to any form of digital workspaces, from any device to any cloud.

Read the announcement press release here.

COSMOS marks a revolution in end user computing. With a new OS, an updated management platform and a number of new cloud services, it gives employees an exceptional workspace experience while empowering EUC administrators with greater security, management, and control.

Built for Hybrid Work

COSMOS uniquely supports today’s Hybrid worlds. It offers the hybrid worker access to their hybrid workspace, delivered from hybrid cloud and an increasingly growing set of hybrid applications. It also offers unmatched speed and flexibility for employees and administrators alike as they adopt any type of workspace experience – from VDI and DaaS to SaaS – all from a single highly secure and manageable endpoint OS.

Modular for both Flexibility and Control

COSMOS features a distinctly new OS architecture for more agility and customization in the hybrid world. For the first time, the new IGEL OS architecture completely separates the base OS from its full suite of validated and integrated applications – which are now available through the IGEL App Portal (just one of the new cloud services available with COSMOS). A new version of the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) included with COSMOS provides support for both IGEL OS 11 and the new IGEL OS 12. This provides ultimate flexibility and lends itself to helping IGEL’s existing customers easily migrate their current endpoint estate.

This modularity delivers the flexibility organizations need to evolve and adopt new EUC technologies at their own pace while still empowering users with the productive and secure computing experience they demand in today’s hybrid work world.

Secure Endpoint Computing

IGEL OS 12 takes the proven security of IGEL to new levels. By separating the IGEL OS endpoint from local and cloud-delivered apps and services, IGEL OS not only updates faster but has an even smaller footprint, for a reduced attack surface. Adding to its security features are new secure unified communication protocols between the UMS and IGEL OS-powered endpoints, which couple with the security of the Linux-based read-only operating system IGEL is already known for. Together, there isn’t a safer way to empower remote work productivity.

Faster Onboarding and Faster Updates

Thanks to the IGEL Onboarding Service, new with COSMOS, employees can self-enroll new devices in under five minutes, allowing faster deployment of workspaces to remote workers, and removing the burden on IT. And with more devices from Lenovo, HP and LG Business solutions now shipping with IGEL OS as standard, thin clients, laptops and desktop machines can be shipped direct to employees from the factory, enabling almost instant, secure access to their data and applications – straight out of the shipping carton!

In addition to the new Onboarding Service, IGEL OS, the new management architecture and the introduction of the IGEL App Portal “store” also means that updates post-deployment are now significantly faster and easier than ever before. New updates from IGEL Ready vendors, such as Microsoft, Citrix, VMware and ControlUp are available and can be automatically imported into the COSMOS platform from the IGEL App Portal. These updates, in turn, can be rapidly deployed thanks to the new OS architecture and independently updated without the need to update the underlying OS. For our customers, it means IT teams and employees alike get the latest features and innovations from IGEL and our technology partners faster than ever!

Support for What’s Next

IGEL COSMOS is designed for today’s and tomorrow’s digital workspaces. Supporting modern end user computing, where digital workspaces may be delivered from any on-prem or cloud-based source, COSMOS is the future-proofed solution delivering workspaces and apps no matter how they evolve over time. It streamlines the workload for IT endpoint administrators while providing a secure, modern, and productive desktop for end users.

Even more, it puts frustrating, tedious disruptions such as onboarding, updates, patches, and endpoint troubleshooting in the past, making life much easier for IT and end-users with the time-to-productivity faster than ever.

Simply put, COSMOS is end-user computing evolved. Its modular architecture, granular endpoint control, and secure, managed access to any cloud-delivered digital workspace powers great user experiences for today’s hybrid work.

Recent news regarding the two most historically influential companies within the VDI industry has shone a spotlight on an ever-changing, dynamic environment for organizations looking to deliver secure, controlled, and productive end-user virtual experiences to their people.  Last year, Citrix announced major organizational leadership changes coupled with some significant employee layoffs. And just last week, Broadcom announced its intention to acquire VMware for $61 billion, making it one of the largest acquisitions in tech history.

For organizations using technologies and products from these two companies to deliver virtual apps and desktops to their end-users, some may be feeling a bit concerned about the future, especially in terms of how they will continue to manage and control their end-users’ digital workspaces.

The Future Requires Agility

At IGEL, we view this very recent history as further evidence that the delivery of digital workspaces to end users is continuing to evolve. That is why IGEL OS is designed for secure access to any digital workspace regardless of the products and technologies used for delivery and access. Whether it’s virtual apps, virtual desktops, web-based apps, DaaS, SaaS, multi-cloud, Citrix, VMware, Microsoft AVD/Windows 365/cloud PC, IGEL OS is the lightweight, modular, and secure Linux-based OS that is ideal for any and all of these scenarios. And any others that may emerge in the future as more and more apps and workloads move to the cloud.

Think of it this way. To access any form of cloud-delivered apps or services from your endpoint device of choice, the best option is to use an endpoint operating system that:

  • Is secure from malware and other endpoint threats
  • Is easy to manage and control at scale
  • Enables a great end-user experience for a highly distributed workforce
  • Reduces hardware capital and management and energy operating costs

As the way we all work and communicate continues to evolve over the next 5, 10, or even 20 years, organizations powering their endpoints today with IGEL OS know they already have the ideal managed endpoint OS for secure access to any digital workspace. It has been purpose-built to deliver freedom of choice and agility for a future-proofed digital workspace.

Further, for those companies currently worried about ransomware or bogged down with managing their hundreds or even many thousands of endpoints, the correct endpoint OS choice is IGEL OS. It will help IT  teams sleep better at night and make both IT and end-users more productive now and into the future. There’s no better time to discover the value of IGEL OS. It’s as easy as a simple download from IGEL.com.

Be sure to check out the latest Attic one-to-one chat with Nabeel Youakim, whose career spans tech history milestones in end user computing and cloud migration. Nabeel shares a key factor any successful partnership must have and his insights into turning around problem relationships.

IGEL continues its exploration and celebration of origin stories in Episode 5 of “The Attic” video podcast featuring a conversation with sales and business development wizard Nabeel Youakim. Nabeel led Microsoft’s early expansion into Asia-Pac, then went on to become Citrix’s employee #350. Over 22 years at Citrix he was a major force in building alliances with Microsoft and the partner ecosystem and launching Citrix’s cloud platform. Tune in and hear Nabeel recount a time when it wasn’t clear if Microsoft was going to squash Citrix, a time when Citrix almost went under.

Now, some 18 years later, Nabeel is ahead of the curve again, as Chief Development Officer at Tehama, where he is leading the next level of VDI in ‘virtual rooms.’ In fact, it was at an IGEL virtual event that he met Tehama executives! Now, Nabeel does it all: business development, building the partner ecosystem and the IGEL Ready partner alliance.

On Building Alliances. “To work with a much bigger partner like Microsoft you have to be patient and understand there are many components…It’s not just the engineering team. There’s a corporate team, a field team. You need to engage with each team to make sure your message is understood [and relates] to their objectives.”

On Reseller Importance: “Mark Templeton at Citrix set up the culture that no one company could sell all the components. You really needed a reseller to put them all together and sell them as a solution…Mark came from the partner side and understood that very well.”

On the logic of EUC: “For years our community has worked to build the whole VDI and DaaS environment. For a long time we used the MAPS acronym:  management, access, performance and security. The end user computing paradigm solves all these very well.”

Nabeel Youakim

Listen in and find out what rough-and-ready sport Nabeel excelled at. It’s a good foundation for surviving the tech industry!

Be sure to check out this conversation with veteran entrepreneur Kevin Goodman, a great sage on what it takes to make a product successful and how no one can go it alone during the sleepless nights and occasional hiccups of a software startup.

IGEL continues its exploration and celebration of origin stories in Episode 4 of “The Attic” video podcast. The series gives a nod to IGEL’s founding 20 years ago in a small attic in Bremen, Germany by sharing the stories of tech experts and thought leaders across the end user computing (EUC) industry.

This fourth episode features a conversation with software innovator Kevin Goodman. Kevin helped create some of the early products in end user computing, selling one of his successful ventures, RTO Software to VMWare in 2010, and a second, FSLogix, to Microsoft in 2018. Currently, he is working on a mystery project at Amazon which will no doubt be another market-moving venture when public.

Kevin Goodman never wanted to make computers his career. Math was his passion but at the University of Georgia he aced a Fortran course and never looked back. After college, in 1995, working as a coder, he had a chance serendipitous conversation with former Citrix CEO Mark Templeton who introduced him to Citrix and EUC.  He learned about putting a Citrix client on a server rather than putting an application (Lotus Notes) on a back-office server. It eliminated tedious updates and you could say it was one of the first conversations about EUC!

EUC Predictions. “We have a name for it now, the work-from-home industry. 2020 showed enterprises that work from home is legitimate…It will be a hybrid situation, maybe a couple of days at home and a couple of days in the office. Desktop growth will continue, maybe not at the rate of 2020, but for the next several years at least.”

Customer approach. “I didn’t know to call it customer obsession at FSLogix but that’s what we had and that’s why we succeeded. It is the first leadership principle at Amazon… Customer obsession serves you well over time.”

The value of partnerships. “Customers sometimes don’t know which way to go. And let’s face it, if they buy the wrong product it could be their career on the line, so they reach out to people they do trust to say ‘hey is this real?’ Having those partners stand up and say something nice about you and having software that works and the metrics that allow you to prove it to the customer, then it becomes very synergistic at that point.”  – Kevin Goodman

Kevin also talks about his very short ‘retirement,’ why he went to Amazon instead of starting a company this time around, and what is the answer he is looking for when he asks new entrepreneurs about their motivation.

For some time the end-user computing (EUC) market has been abuzz with questions around a new version of Windows and rumors of a new service, offering Windows from the cloud.

Introducing Windows 365

Today at Microsoft Inspire, Microsoft finally announced Windows 365 – the formerly named and rumored Cloud PC or project Deschutes. Announced as part of the keynote and followed by a great video introduction from Scott Manchester, Windows 365 provides a SIMPLE, easy way for businesses to set up, deploy and manage virtualized Windows desktops (which run in the Microsoft cloud) allowing users to remotely connect to them from any device. While Microsoft already has a DaaS solution in Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), the simplicity of Windows 365 is more of a SaaS solution allowing almost anyone to easily start a virtual Windows machine in the cloud and connect, all for a per-user subscription cost.

Included in the platform is some super SMART technology allowing image management, regional deployment and policies to be applied, again all from simple web-based UI which leverages Microsoft Endpoint Manager. The offering also includes insights and endpoint analytics allowing organizations visibility into performance and employee experience, even allowing the administrator to change the specification of a virtualized Windows desktop on the fly should a user need more CPU or RAM.

Lastly, Windows 365 continues to demonstrate that running machines from the cloud can help improve SECURITY, especially when people are working from anywhere. Running Windows remotely in the cloud means that no applications or data are downloaded to the endpoint. No more VPN connections from laptops or BYOD devices back to the office. Whether someone is in the office or at home, the desktop remains secure in the cloud.

Windows 11’s Focus on Simplicity and Ease of Use

Simple, smart and secure are also phrases that could be associated with the announcement of Windows 11. Ever since Microsoft announced that Windows 10 would be the last version of Windows, people have debated whether and when Windows 11 would arrive. Announced on June 24th, with rumors of an October release, Windows 11 very clearly Is laser-focused on some key areas: primarily, simplicity and ease of use. Looking more like a Chrome or MAC OS, the user interface is more 2021 than previous versions and no doubt will appeal to the younger generations who have become accustomed to swiping and searching not using a traditional start menu. In fact, the whole UI is being updated for a fresher look with MS Team integration and far easier ways to find the applications and files you need. The consumerization of IT and the increased use of tablets and phones etc have led to a world where experience is king and Windows 11 is focused on keeping things simple…

Under the hood, security still plays an important role and with news that the TPM 2.0 chip will be required for Windows 11 this further enhances security. While this is a welcome addition, (who doesn’t want improved security?),  many have started to ask the question about older hardware not being able to run Windows 11 – especially important with the current chip shortage and increased attention on sustainability.

Across the release, Windows 11 does look and feel different and in time I am confident that the innovation engine in MS will include more smart features for the IT Pro and corporate employees, but at present, much of the “smart” seems to be focused on gaming and touch / tablet like features.

Work from Anywhere

It’s clear, from both Windows 365 and Windows 11 that Microsoft is supporting today’s new way of working – commonly known as Hyrbid working or work from anywhere. Employees, students and consumers demand a simple, easy to use, productive workspace experience.

In fact, we found this to be true earlier this year. In our survey from our annual DISRUPT event, 61% named user experience the most significant challenge they faced when shifting to a work-from-home model. That won’t change as users migrate back to the office or demand productive business app access from anywhere they want to work.

Windows 365 is ‘the one to watch’

I welcome the news and congratulate Microsoft on both Windows 11 and Windows 365, but for me, Windows 365 is the most interesting and game-changing news of recent weeks.

Windows 11 ultimately is still Windows.  With all its compelling new features, you can’t overlook the obvious: it still is Windows under the hood. And while having Windows on the endpoint is necessary for some business applications, it’s not the most efficient for most. It still needs to be patched, secured and managed. In 2021 we should be spending less time on endpoint management!  That’s why for business Microsoft will continue to show the value of Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and after today, Microsoft 365. Both AVD and Windows 365 offer Windows in the cloud where it can be more easily managed, secured and protected. The perfect solution for working from anywhere and something Citrix, VMware and others have been delivering for over 20 years.

Windows in the cloud, people still need an endpoint

So what should you use at the edge when accessing AVD or Windows 365 – well, something that’s SIMPLE, SMART and SECURE…..Simple to deploy and easy for employees to use. Smart in how it connects to the cloud, supports Unified communications and can be installed on any device.  And super secure thanks to a read-only file system….

The Best of Both Worlds

Access a rich Windows desktop experience from either AVD or Windows 365 from a super-secure IGEL OS running on any device.

  • IGEL OS + Windows 365 / AVD saves money. Ease the transition to AVD  or Windows 365 by minimizing capital expenditures and extending the life of existing hardware to postpone, in some cases for years, the cost and disruption of the dreaded PC hardware refresh. Running Windows 365 removes the worry of DaaS costs, and AVD can save on datacentre costs.
  • IGEL OS + Windows 365 /AVD is simple. Easy to use, IGEL features no-touch deployment and drag-and-drop profiling that makes IT administration significantly less time-consuming. IGEL OS can also boot and configure itself via the cloud when rolling out new devices. In addition, Windows 365 and AVD is simple to set up and with Windows 365, even your users can manage their own cloud PC.
  • IGEL OS + Windows 365 /AVD is secure – Data, apps and desktops in the cloud are far easier to secure with Windows 365 and AVD. Coupled with the read-only IGEL OS (which runs on Linux), and IGEL’s “Chain of Trust,” users can have the most secure workspace delivered to any device, anywhere

Need for an Enhanced User Experience Drives Adoption for VDI and User Experience Management Solutions

Earlier this year, during our annual DISRUPT event, we had the opportunity to dig deeper into the issues and challenges IT faced during the onset of the global pandemic. Most specifically, we looked into how end user computing (EUC) professionals addressed the immediate need to move workers from the office to home with record speed.

Based on survey responses from 269 end user computing (EUC) professionals across North America and EMEA, 61% named user experience the most significant challenge they faced when shifting to a work-from-home model. While being the number one issue across all regions, the challenge was more prevalent in North America (66%) than EMEA (52%).

This finding was notable, considering the significance of the other challenges we ranked, including issues around security and VPNs as well as help desk impact and policy control. The takeaway? EUC professionals know that if user experience isn’t optimal, the productivity and performance of the company can suffer.

Security Still Critical Concern

Even while user experience ranked the highest, it’s still notable to see that nearly half (47%) of EUC professionals ranked endpoint security a top challenge. Combine this with other related security issues including policy control (43%), VPN issues (42%) and unpatched devices accessing the network (21%), one could argue that concerns around security, together, do claim the top spot.

What is the EUC professional’s biggest concern when it comes to security? That they can’t effectively manage remote software, OS upgrades and patching for their remote systems (34%). Fear of ransomware attacks (24%) and accidental data loss (22%) were also notable. This shows that, while the concerns may vary, fear of limited protection for remote workers and their devices from unwanted intrusion is high.

Need for a Better User Experience and Security Drives VDI Adoption

With user experience and security so top of mind, it’s not a surprise that EUC professionals, to address these needs, named virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) as a top consideration for adoption (58%) following the pandemic. This was a much more heightened consideration in North America (65%) than EMEA (25%).

Other significant technologies being considered following the pandemic are the adoption of cloud workspaces and desktop-as-a-service (DaaS) (44%), centralized endpoint management (38%) and moving Windows to the cloud and off the desktop (30%). Each of these solutions puts control back into the hands of IT for greater security and policy management, while further empowering remote users with the data and application access they need for high productivity.

Enabling technologies, including the adoption of a non-Windows based endpoint OS and the conversion of user devices into cloud-enabled endpoints also ranked as desired post-pandemic technologies, 24% and 23% respectively. As solutions to enable VDI, DaaS and the move of Windows to the cloud, these additional selections show that EUC professionals are not only looking at the future of their user workspace architecture, but how they will improve deployment speed for that architecture, while lowering costs.

Persistence of Work from Home Drives New Endpoint Priorities

Among the EUC professionals responding to our survey, one additional factor remained perfectly clear: employees will continue to work remote, long after the pandemic subsides. In fact, during the pandemic, 75% of respondents reported the more than 50% of their employees were working from home. Once the effects of the pandemic are over, as many as 39% expect more than 50% of their employees to continue working from home.

What does this mean for future EUC technology priorities? Respondents still prioritized end user experience, stating that employee experience management (EEM – 58%) technologies would become their top priority over the next 12 months. Driven by the need for increased security and a lighter IT resource load, identity and access management (IAM – 52%) and modern unified endpoint management (MUEM – 45%) were also in the top three.

Ultimately, the global pandemic has given EUC professionals a lot to deal with, in very fast order. This has accelerated many of the trends and technologies that may have already been in discussion, including VDI, DaaS and cloud workspaces. But what may not have been as anticipated is just how important a delightful user experience is to ensure business continuity and productivity.

Moving forward, close attention to the needs of users, along with ensuring security and simplified management for IT, will remain more important than ever. As we push beyond the effect of COVID-19 on the workplace, a heightened understanding of the challenges and needs to empower users to work remotely will remain. The silver lining may just be that we are more ready than ever to enable an agile work model, come what may.

Since joining IGEL just under five years ago, I’ve been working to build IGEL’s market presence as the next-gen edge OS for cloud workspaces. It’s been an amazing trek as we’ve built out the IGEL brand as a software-first solution for end user computing (EUC), becoming a critical solution for tens of thousands of businesses in pursuit of security, manageability, choice of cloud, and high-fidelity performance. Customers want something that ‘just works’ and at IGEL we’re laser focused on providing the end-to-end solutions that enable organizations to both survive and thrive.

Despite the challenges the past year from COVID, with IGEL’s help, market-leading customers in healthcare, retail, banking, manufacturing, education, and beyond were able to stay open and remain competitive. Additionally, IGEL enabled scores of organizations to successfully divert their workforces to safely work from home.

Today, we mark another significant milestone in our historic journey with the announcement that TA Associates (TA) has signed a definitive agreement to make a growth investment in IGEL. Not only is this significant for IGEL, but it’s also noteworthy for the EUC market overall. Here’s why:

  • It underscores the impact the new remote work and work-from-home movement is having on IT. Today, users want to remain productive without boundaries or limitations. IT must enable this new work paradigm by enabling secure access to their desired applications and data with any device they choose, from anywhere they want to work. The TA investment in IGEL shows they see the tremendous impact of this EUC shift as well as the value IGEL brings to this new future of work.
  • It emphasizes the importance of endpoint security. Cybersecurity threats and data breach risks are more prevalent than ever. And, with workers operating more often than not at home or on-the-go, securing the endpoint is a vital mandate for IT. Using a Linux-based OS on the endpoint – and accessing Windows in the cloud or data center – is a major step in alleviating security risk. IGEL, with the power of TA behind us, will continue to enhance endpoint security for organizations that need to enable workers to remain productive from anywhere. IGEL OS has edge security built in. With a tiny attack surface, it minimizes endpoint security exposures while reducing troublesome security processes, like patch management and software updates.
  • It showcases the rising adoption of cloud workspaces. Heavy and expensive endpoints are no longer required for a high-performing endpoint experience. Now desktop PC workloads are frequently being moved into the cloud or a secure datacenter where they can be protected with inherent fault tolerance and automated backups. IGEL OS is the operating system of choice for these cloud workspaces – offering fast logins, rapid application loading, more consistent operation and embedded security. The TA growth investment in IGEL highlights the importance of this movement towards cloud workspace adoption as the new standard for end user computing.

From everything I’ve observed, it feels like we’re at an inflection point. Entire industries and business models will be transformed. 2021 will be a year where those that make the right investments can thrive. And now with this new support from TA Associates, IGEL has the opportunity to accelerate our growth, innovation, and achieve a critically needed subscription model aligned with customer requirements and our key partners.

Bill Veghte Joins the Team

The TA growth investment is further underlined by the significance of adding Bill Veghte as IGEL Executive Chairman. Bill, a leader and visionary who has decades of experience developing operating systems and brining industry-leading technologies to market for companies including Microsoft and HP, is also placing his bets on IGEL.

As the Executive Chairman of the expanded IGEL board, Bill will enhance the IGEL growth trajectory as we expand and deepen the strong relationships IGEL has built with our technology partners. It’s yet another validation that IGEL is on a rocket ship of growth and innovation that will truly transform the EUC industry for good.

Just the Beginning

This is just the start of some amazing announcements to come from IGEL. These past few years have been an eventful time in the EUC industry – and IGEL – all because we’ve been supported by an amazing team of believers and visionaries. But it’s only setting the stage for the big things ahead. We invite you to hop aboard as IGEL explodes forward, taking the future of EUC to dramatic new levels of innovation. #Believe

When I think about my stints as a freelancer or temporary worker, I remember the frequent delays I experienced while accessing essential data. With fees booked on an hourly basis, time was of the essence for the client, but all too often such access issues delayed the onset of the assignment and spiked the costs. Known as the “extern,” a streamlined log-on to systems from Day One posed challenges for the IT team.

Knowing what I know now about some of the challenges of end user computing (EUC), I recognize those organizations did not leverage Virtual Desktop Infrastructures (VDI).  With the advancements in EUC technology and accessibility to cloud services, organizations can alleviate many of the challenges of managing a patchwork of use cases and dispersed infrastructure.

In an attempt to optimize IT resources, many organizations have embraced Remote Desktop Services (RDS), VDI, DaaS, and cloud services. But IT teams can only fully realize the benefits of such technologies when they achieve simplicity and security at the endpoint. Providing access to a managed and secure workspace is critical for business continuity now and into the future.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the contribution the “gig economy” makes in helping a disrupted economy stay afloat. With the unfortunate introduction of furloughs, lay-offs, and redundancies, key skills and competencies remain a necessity, albeit on mostly an on-demand basis. Following ongoing mandates for work from home, businesses are looking to optimize their IT resources to provide secure workspaces to their employees and guest workers.

With IGEL, IT teams do not have to start from scratch. Rather, they can build on their existing resources to optimize and extend their VDI or DaaS ecosystem.  Any compatible x86-64 PC, laptop, and thin client can gain controlled and secure access to a company’s workspace with IGEL’s UD Pocket. A tiny USB stick, the UD Pocket and UD Pocket2 with a USB-C connector deliver IGEL OS from almost anywhere. The user simply plugs it into their device to boot IGEL OS, and connect to their secure corporate workspace be that VMware, Citrix, AWS, Microsoft, or others. With 100+ partner technology integrations, IGEL’s operating system streamlines many known complexities while saving IT budget. The IT team can manage this profile remotely with IGEL Universal Management Suite software, even outside the corporate network by connecting to the IGEL Cloud Gateway — no VPN is required.

The IGEL UD Pocket provides a secure and centrally managed solution for businesses to enable guest workers with controlled access to their network even on their own personal device.  Once the session is complete the user simply unplugs the UD Pocket to resume the original set-up. Upon completion of an assignment, the IT team can remotely deactivate the IGEL OS profile.

Gig/temporary workers are here to stay, not just during the pandemic but as a big part of the future of work.  With IGEL, organizations can make sure all of their users – full-time, part-time, visiting, temporary, or project focused – get secure, controlled access to their desired workspaces no matter where they may be located.
