It was a great experience bringing The Attic on the road and getting a chance to visit with Mike Strohl at our DISRUPT event in Newport Beach. Mike is CEO of e360, (formerly Entisys), a highly respected tech reseller and solution provider founded by his family three decades ago. Mike takes us through the company’s early days doing PC training, forward to its prominence today as a powerhouse in the EUC space.

Although e360 was founded by his dad, George Strohl, Mike did not follow the logical path from school directly to the family business. A San Francisco native, Mike majored in international marketing at San Francisco State, and having worked for UPS during college, wanted to join their corporate marketing team. Mike, however, offered a little too much unsolicited plans on what his next UPS job should be and was sent to the Siberian overnight schedule. It was fortuitous. After his shift, he spent the day working with his dad, getting a feel for the business. Sadly, his dad passed on just months after Mike officially joined the company. He and his brother Matt, along with his stepmother Bets, decided to continue building the business. At Citrix events they met Agile360, a company in a similar space, which they acquired in 2008. This, along with a series of other acquisitions has elevated e360 to becoming a leading provider of security, cloud, automation, digital workplace, and Microsoft solutions.

While Mike wasn’t much for traditional team sports growing up, there’s no question he’s at the top of his game today, leading an organization of almost 300 people and winning dozens of industry accolades for superior partnerships. From focusing on providing existing solutions, e360 is now also working with VCs and investors to create market briefings and work with customers to innovate products and get ahead of trends.

One influence Mike believes is only getting bigger is putting cybersecurity at the center of any EUC or data center build. Changing rules around privacy, security and compliance regulations, and companies’ need for help in finding a solution, opens the door for e360 to consult on the best cyber strategy.

Partnering with industry allies or with customers is at the heart of Mike’s approach to business. He shares this belief with IGEL, in companies partnering in the trenches together to build a better world and using technology to do it. Both companies continue to work together as partners in delivering EUC solutions.

Tune in and hear Mike talk about the changing dynamics in the cloud workspace market and how companies are retooling to become cloud-centric innovators. Also, find out what school course Mike failed. You’ll be surprised!

On Why Google is Great. “…what they’re doing around partner engagement, opportunities, business development, investment… they’re a great innovative partner.”

On Success Ingredients. “… success really comes with people that can execute. It doesn’t mean take technology X out and put technology Y in.”

On Effective Partnering. “In this business if you’re worried about competition then there’s something wrong with what you’re doing. …Customers’ requirements are changing now at an unprecedented rate…so if you don’t have your networking community, you have no chance of success.” Mike Strohl

At the DISRUPT conference in Newport Beach, California, we sat down with Scott Manchester, Director of Program Management, Windows 365, Microsoft, for an amazing journey into Scott’s career starting out as a home automation entrepreneur, then leading Microsoft innovation from Windows 7 through Windows 365. Ever creative, he is already developing new Windows 365 products and other ways Microsoft can support virtualization and the future of end user computing.

The right timing is a theme in Scott’s life. He grew up in the Seattle area, graduated from the University of Washington, and earned his MBA from Washington State University. Out of college, his first job was working for Microsoft co-founder, the late Paul Allen. Scott did technical projects for Allen’s various estates, properties, and yachts, largely in the home automation space. He took that expertise and built his home automation company, of which 90% of the clients were Microsoft people. After a while, he decided it was time to do something different, and wanted to work for Bill Gates. It was the only job he applied for. In 2001 he joined Microsoft.

Over the last 21 years, Scott has been front and center at a dazzling number of milestone innovations at Microsoft, acting as a serial entrepreneur within the company. He holds 15 patents, including his work in Wi-Fi protected setup, formerly called Windows Connect Now. He then moved into media, media streaming and media management, and led the development of the media technologies in Windows 7 and Windows 8, and from there got into the second screen remoting, gaming, and virtualization space.

Scott and IGEL sealed their virtualization alliance over breakfast at a Seattle IHOP. IGEL learned that Scott was working on something that would revolutionize end user computing. He did, and the result is AVD. Being entrepreneurial, Scott knew there was more to do to broaden the utility of AVD. He spent several years with his team developing Windows 365 as a layer over AVD, to provide a full SaaS-based solution that allows customers to manage that environment the same way they manage physical devices.

IGEL and Windows 365 were a natural EUC fit, joining IGEL’s Linux OS with Microsoft’s OS. IGEL early on developed some of the first dedicated AVD endpoint devices, using its in-depth expertise and impressing Microsoft with its progress and customer value. A high point was IGEL CEO Jed Ayres joining Scott on stage at Ignite 2019 to discuss IGEL, Linux OS and its partnership to support AVD.

Tune in and hear Scott talk about Microsoft’s continuing partnership with IGEL and new Microsoft developments underway in which physical and virtual computing will blend even more. And find out how your smartphone owes some innovative technology to Scott!

On Windows 365 Development during COVID. “…we built the product all working remote… so no better way to build a product …you know, it’s like building the car while you’re driving it, right? You know immediately what you need.”

On How his Martial Arts Experience defines a Good Partnership. “We call it flow rolling, where you’re just moving, and letting them get moves, and you get moves, …though that instinct to fight and win comes out sometimes. So, you really have to put yourself in the right headspace to make sure that it’s a great experience for both parties, and I think that’s a basis for any good partnership.”

On Changing the Consumer Device Mindset. “…You see so many of these new services coming out now that offer ways of accessing entertainment, streamed to you. Those are setting people’s mindset that I don’t have to own something or physically touch something to be able to consume or be immersed in that experience…and virtualization is basically taking your PC experience and giving you a Netflix like experience…”  Scott Manchester

I’ve been in the business of “remote work” all my working life. It wasn’t by design at first. In fact, when I was in college I went to work putting a catalog online for a business that was hundreds of miles away. I did the work from my home, communicating with my managers over the phone and email. It was my first experience working outside the traditional office. It was my boss’ too. In those moments, we both learned the value and challenges of remote work which has impacted my career in ways I may never have imagined back then.

What Remote Work May Put at Risk

That early experience actually evolved into my MBA thesis which, you guessed it, was on managing a remote workforce. Looking back on that body of work, I reflect on how much more I understand now about remote working, and what is truly at risk. In short: the value of collaboration.

You see, I’ve delved for years into the importance of the remote worker’s user experience. How to improve productivity. What can drive performance. How to enable users to work how they want, when, and where. In fact, I helped trademark the “anyplace workspace” term as far back as 2008, when working with Cisco and NetApp on a desktop alliance that helped to empower the remote workers.

Yes. User experience is important. But it’s still missing something vital. Something that really didn’t strike me until six years ago when I worked in a company where being in the office was required most of the time. There’s magic that can happen when you’re in a room brainstorming together. The energy of collaboration. The human spirit that gets unlocked when you break bread together, laugh, joke, and engage.

Collaboration is the Heart of Innovation

Pointing out what can be lost when independently working from home might sound funny coming from a CEO of a company that’s mission is to securely enable a remote workforce. Don’t get me wrong. Remote work is vital to the future of digital business. It will never go away. We just need to embrace remote work with a clear view into what it may change or how it might impact business-critical areas including innovation, employee loyalty, or passion.

As a leader of highly virtual business, I’ve seen the effect of employees working independently from their homes. I feel IGEL has been successful in helping to keep employees engaged and productive through the pandemic era. I also know that during this time we’ve all felt loss and loneliness through isolation and seclusion.

Now, as we slowly go back into the office or meet in person I can feel the energy lift. I recently completed a whirl-wind roadshow of our in-person DISRUPT Unite event and the elation in the room that came from seeing everyone face-to-face again was unmistakable. We needed to connect. We needed to break bread. We needed to laugh, joke, and engage. We, humans, are social animals. Something extra happens face-to-face.

The takeaway? Remote work can’t be adopted at the expense of collaboration. And collaborative work can’t be simply achieved through a video screen. The success of a business comes from people – and the success of people comes from connection. As we embark on the remote work journey of the future, let’s vow to remember the importance of togetherness. It’s this collaboration where magic happens. Let’s stay human.
