Guest blog post from ControlUp’s Joel Stocker.

For nearly 5 years, ControlUp has offered enhanced monitoring capabilities to customers that use IGEL-powered devices in their VDI or DaaS environments. And each time we improved upon our integration over the years, we have been focused on making it easier for IT teams to get relevant performance information from their IGEL devices and bringing greater end-to-end visibility into IT infrastructure than ever before.

And today IGEL and ControlUp are making it even easier with the availability of ControlUp’s Remote DX extension and the Edge DX agent through the IGEL COSMOS App Portal.

The ControlUp Edge DX and ControlUp Remote DX apps have been validated for use on IGEL OS-powered devices as part of the IGEL Ready partner program and are now available in the IGEL App Portal as part of IGEL COSMOS Cloud Services.

“Together, IGEL and ControlUp are delivering the productive and high-performance DEX experience IGEL OS users need to help our mutual customers improve productivity and lower costs for their end-user computing environments. By making the ControlUp Edge DX and Remote DX apps available via the IGEL App Portal for IGEL COSMOS, we are enabling our customers to benefit from the full power of these valuable DEX solutions with rapid access to and implementation of their latest versions with cloud-direct download efficiency.” Jim Airdo, Senior Vice President, Strategic Alliances, IGEL

IGEL COSMOS, launched in the spring of 2023, brings many benefits to IGEL customers. The most significant new advancement with IGEL COSMOS is that, for the first time, IGEL is completely separating the base IGEL OS from its validated and integrated applications and interfaces, while adding an additional separate component in the form of value-added cloud services. Together, these three vital components comprise IGEL COSMOS. This modular architecture of “separate but equal” elements of endpoint operating system, management and control, and cloud services enables maximum IT flexibility in introducing or enhancing apps, desktops, services, and any other form of cloud-delivered digital workspaces as the cloud continues to evolve.

The above-mentioned separation of the IGEL OS and the applications that run on the devices, and of course the introduction of the IGEL App Portal, make it much easier for IT teams to configure and deploy the ControlUp Edge DX agent and Remote DX extensions without the need for creating custom partitions like was previously required with IGEL OS 11.

ControlUp Remote DX

Designed for employees that use virtual or cloud desktops and applications, ControlUp Remote DX collects relevant user-side telemetry that affects their Digital Employee Experience, such as the quality and speed of the Wi-Fi connection, as well as the performance of their internet connection. With support for IGEL-powered devices connecting to Citrix and VMware Horizon, IT teams can quickly determine the root cause of connectivity issues reported by users.

ControlUp Edge DX

For even greater visibility into the performance of an IGEL-powered device and the ability for troubleshooting, remediation and remote support independent of connectivity to a virtual or cloud desktop, IT admins can deploy the Edge DX agent from the IGEL App Portal. ControlUp Edge DX reduces IT support costs for physical desktop devices by identifying, resolving, and preventing problems that traditional device management software can’t. As a result, enterprises see fewer help desk tickets, close tickets faster and ultimately deliver a better desktop experience.

Ada Lovelace Day: Honoring Women in STEM Fields

Every year on the second Tuesday of October, Ada Lovelace Day (ALD) is celebrated to recognize the contributions of women in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This day pays tribute to Ada Lovelace, one of the world’s first programmers and a visionary who lived in the 19th century. Her legacy lives on today through ALD, a global movement that honors and inspires women in STEM careers. In this blog article, we take a closer look at the significance of Ada Lovelace Day and celebrate just a few of the outstanding women who have made a lasting impact on the world of science and technology.

Ada Lovelace: A Visionary in the 19th Century

Ada Lovelace was born in London, England, in 1815, and she was the daughter of the famous poet Lord Byron. Her mother, Anne Isabella Milbanke, encouraged Ada’s early interest in mathematics and natural sciences, laying the foundation for her future work.

Her breakthrough came in 1843 when she collaborated with Charles Babbage on his Analytical Engine, one of the earliest concepts of a programmable computing machine. Ada Lovelace annotated Babbage’s work, including the famous “A-Text,” considered the world’s first computer program. In this text, she described how the Analytical Engine could be used not only for numerical calculations but also for creating music and graphics—an astonishing vision that extended far beyond her time.

Ada Lovelace Day: Celebrating Women in STEM

Ada Lovelace Day was launched in 2009 by British scientist Suw Charman-Anderson. This day serves to highlight the achievements of women in STEM fields and raise awareness of the existing gender disparities in these industries. ALD provides an opportunity to celebrate women who have excelled in their respective fields and, at the same time, encourage young girls and women to pursue careers in STEM.

Outstanding Women in STEM

Marie Curie – The Polish-French physicist and chemist Marie Curie is one of the most renowned women in the history of science. She received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911 for her groundbreaking work on radioactivity.

Rosalind Franklin – British chemist Rosalind Franklin made significant contributions to the understanding of DNA structure. Although often overlooked, her work was crucial to our understanding of genetics.

Hedy Lamarr – Yes, the actress Hedy Lamarr was also a talented engineer. During World War II, she, along with composer George Antheil, developed frequency hopping technology, laying the foundation for modern wireless communication systems.

Katherine Johnson – As an African-American mathematician, Katherine Johnson played a key role in U.S. space exploration history. She calculated trajectories for the first manned spaceflights, including the historic Apollo 11 moon landing.

Grace Hopper – Known as “the grandmother of COBOL programming,” American computer scientist Grace Hopper revolutionized software development. Her work led to the development of COBOL, one of the first programming languages.

The Significance of Diversity in STEM

Ada Lovelace Day is not just a day of celebration but also a reminder of the importance of diversity in STEM fields. Women and other underrepresented groups bring diverse perspectives and ideas to science and technology. By recognizing these talents and removing barriers, we can find solutions to the complex challenges of our world more efficiently.

Ada Lovelace Day at IGEL Technology

Ada Lovelace Day is important to IGEL because it provides an annual reminder that we still have work to do in terms of achieving gender equality and diversity in both the workplace and society as a whole. Here at IGEL, we have established the IGEL4Women in Tech initiative, which plays a crucial role in our efforts to raise awareness of the challenges women face, especially in tech-based industries like ours. This group consists of dedicated employees (women and men) who actively support and promote women in STEM careers, through workshops, presentations, and social media activities throughout the year to highlight the unique challenges that women in our industry face. These events not only provide a platform for sharing experiences but also foster discussions on strategies for promoting gender equality. Another important step we take at IGEL to promote diversity in our company is our presence at job fairs specifically targeting women. We recognize the importance of actively reaching out to female talent and hiring them. We firmly believe that diversity in our teams is key to success and contributes to the development of innovative solutions.

Ada Lovelace Day reminds us that together, we can work towards a fairer and more diverse world. Ada Lovelace would undoubtedly be proud of how far we have come in recent years and how far we can still go.

The Digital Workspace  Ecosystem Alliance (DWEA), a non-profit consortium of technology leaders dedicated to providing vendor-neutral tools and resources to help organizations develop their digital workspace strategies, has released the results of its first annual “State of the Digital Workspace 2022” survey, which looks at adoption, benefits, challenges and opportunities that remote, hybrid and on-premises work environments currently face.

During September 2022, more than 2,500 organizations around the world took part in the survey, which was one of the largest digital workspace-focused surveys to date and comes at a pivotal moment when the upheaval we’ve experienced due to the global pandemic. The lessons learned over the last two years are still fresh in our minds and based on the survey, a clearer picture of the path forward is emerging with many organizations eager to solidify the digital workspace strategies that will see them into the future.

DWEA Survey infographic

Security, Complexity, and Legacy Solutions are Roadblocks to Modernization

It was not surprising to learn that many organizations participating in the DWEA survey agreed that the flexible hybrid workspace is a viable model moving forward, with roughly 6 out of 10 organizations banking on remote/hybrid work for the long term. Yet, these same organizations remain daunted by the task of securing and managing their endpoints. What’s more, according to the survey, many organizations may be prioritizing convenience at the expense of security, even with ransomware and other cybersecurity threats on the rise.

Further, a less than satisfactory experience with legacy technologies including virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) is preventing and/or delaying some organizations from modernizing their digital workspace deployments. in ways that improve the employee experience while at the same time securing the endpoint. As noted in the survey results, this has put many organizations behind the curve when it comes to deploying more streamlined and cost-effective digital workplace strategies and initiatives. In fact, according to the survey, only 6.2% percent of respondents have fully executed their digital workspace strategy.

IGEL Delivers a Powerful, Easy-to-Manage and Secure Digital Workspace Experience

At IGEL, we believe that protecting the network edge is critically important. We also know that patching and securing endpoints is not easy. It can be time-consuming, resource-intensive, and diminish user productivity.

Yet, in a world where people can work from anywhere, IGEL OS can be an important part of any organization’s digital workspace strategy, helping overcome many of the roadblocks that businesses face on the journey toward modernization. Offering fully managed, secure endpoint access to any digital workspace, IGEL OS gives IT teams strong control and end-users the freedom to work as they wish in a hybrid world.

Further, through IGEL Ready, businesses have access to more than 120 technology partners providing hardware, software, and peripheral solutions that have been verified for use with IGEL OS to deliver a powerful, productive, and secure user experience for digital workspaces within modern workplace environments.

In the face of ongoing global discussion around the impact of human activity on our planet, rising energy costs and sustainability are top of mind for both people and businesses. Ways to reduce energy consumption are becoming hot topics.

Research from Px3 shows that end-user computing (EUC) generates 1% of global greenhouse gas annual emissions by manufacturing 460 million devices and the associated energy consumed by 4.2 billion users. The use of efficient devices and modern IT infrastructures play a key role in our ability to make a real impact on reducing energy consumption.

Savvy and Cost-Effective IT Buying Decisions

An informed choice of device is critical for savvy procurement decisions that support energy efficiency requirements and policies. To guide IT buyers and consumers in the decision-making process, the Energy Star certification system and trusted ENERGY STAR label are designed to make it easier to identify which products hold a high standard for efficient energy use and reduced C02 emissions.

IGEL’s hardware partners HP, Lenovo, and LG have achieved Energy Star certification on many thin clients, PCs, and laptops. When businesses use energy-efficient products, they save on electricity which contributes to lower CO2 emissions and a reduced impact on the environment. In fact, research shows by running IGEL OS on an endpoint device that offers a small carbon footprint from both an embodied and use perspective, power consumption can be reduced by more than 22% up to 49%.

Reuse and Repurpose Devices to Optimize IT Resources

By extending the lifespan of existing devices, organizations can significantly reduce the number of emissions required to manufacture a new device. Research shows up to 83% of a device’s total carbon footprint is generated during manufacturing. Therefore, extending the industry standard four-year hardware refresh cycle by multiple years positively impacts reducing emissions in manufacturing and distribution. Further, installing the efficient IGEL OS to upgrade thin clients, PCs, and laptops to a unified, centrally managed and controlled workspace allows access to apps, data, and desktops securely and quickly from anywhere.

A Modern IT Infrastructure for Secure Hybrid Work

The flexibility and agility offered by cloud environments and technology ecosystems of compatible solutions also offer huge potential to further reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption by decreasing dependencies on energy-hungry legacy data centers. Cloud computing enables organizations to offer their employees secure remote and hybrid work options which reduce daily commuting to the office or workplace, and further help to reduce energy use.

These are examples of how smart IT choices can help organizations reduce carbon footprint and energy consumption by choosing technology that optimizes IT resources, reuses hardware for longer, and supports secure hybrid work.

Today is Ada Lovelace Day, an international celebration of a tech visionary and the influential role of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Founded in 2009 by Suw Charman-Anderson, this annual event serves to amplify the profile of women’s contributions in STEM careers and raises awareness of STEM studies among girls and women.

Who is Ada Lovelace?

Born in 1815 in London, England, Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace was a mathematician, writer, and visionary.

Considered a software pioneer today, Lovelace was the first person to envision the greater potential of Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine, a calculation machine with a printing mechanism.  While working on a translation of a paper on the machine from French to English, Lovelace added her own notes. Published in 1943, her translation along with her notes describes how Babbage’s device would work and recognized that given certain input it could be used to create much more than calculating numbers.  She also wrote how it might perform a particular mathematical calculation and set out a detailed plan to weave a long sequence of Bernoulli numbers, considered as the first computer program.

Lovelace was ahead of the time, so much so, that her vision of computing’s potential and possibilities was unrivaled by her peers and went unrecognized for a century.

Studies show that teams with a diverse workforce – across gender, race, age, and other factors – perform better, are more innovative, and lead to more profitable businesses (Hupfer et al.). Despite this research, the tech industry still has a long way to go to reach equal representation for women in the workforce.

Today we commemorate Ada Lovelace and her contribution to computing and information technology. The IGEL4Women in Tech employee resource group is a voluntary, employee-led group that nurtures a diverse, inclusive workplace aligned with IGEL’s mission, values, business practices, and objectives. We aim to support female employees and increase recruitment, retention, and advancement by improving the work environment for women at IGEL in all locations. To achieve this the group builds on a global network to transfer ideas, offer support, and host and attend events with inspirational speakers to encourage women at IGEL to develop their professional skills and expand their horizons.

We recently had the pleasure of talking with Skip Gumble on The Attic during our DISRUPT tour. Skip is Horizon Cloud Services Senior Director at VMware and has global responsibility for driving the end user computing business including virtual applications and desktops. Skip reveals how he started out in sales and systems engineering hardware positions and then saw software and EUC as the future, eventually joining VMware, where he is celebrating his tenth anniversary.

Long before ‘arm’ became a tech word, Skip had an arm, a good one, that made him a stellar third baseman and pitcher at Lovett High School in his hometown of Atlanta. Lovett was serendipitous. They offered an independent study type program during his sophomore year, and Skip chose computer technology. He was able to tinker with the HP 2000 and soon he and a friend realized the computer had no programs. They started writing software and wrote the accounts receivable and payable systems for the school. Skip earned money doing software through high school and used the money to help pay for tuition at Southern Methodist University. He graduated with degrees in computer science and business, earning money in a work-study program with Data General.

Skip began his post-college career at HP where he got the first hint of what end user computing would be today. HP was selling transactional based systems and dealing with end users needing access to information. He then moved to 3Com, and after a total 20 years in hardware he was ready to move back to software.

IGEL and Skip began their friendship and EUC alliance, circa 2008, when he was doing a brief stint at Citrix before spending one year at Dell, then moving to VMware. Good fortune struck when Susan Nash, a former HP colleague, invited Skip to join their VDI and Horizon team at VMware.

Skip says one of the best things about VMware and IGEL’s partnership is both are very focused on driving innovation to help their customers. He sees perfect synergy with VMware in IGEL software’s ability to help the customer gain access anywhere on any device.

Tune in and hear Skip talk about VMware’s merger with Broadcom and how he views the merging working, as well as his take on end user computing’s continued evolution. And discover what Skip’s mom learned about him during the pandemic!

On Why In-Person Still Matters. “…it’s really important to reconnect with everybody in person. …the amount of information and dialog that we can now have with our customers is so much more rich than we could ever have on Zoom.”

On Nurturing Collaboration. “One of the goals we have as a team is to get together in fun places every six months or so. …It is important to go in the office and have a collaboration session. When I go into corporate they schedule meetings with each other as well with me. So, I’m a catalyst to get people to come back and collaborate.”

On End User Compute. “…end user computing, the digital transformation, our customers need our help to get to the next level. Their employees need our help for (their) experience or their customer experience. …If you, as employers of people using technology that entices people to come work for you, that benefits you in a great way.”   Skip Gumble
