Last week at VMware Explore 2023 in Barcelona, IGEL showcased how our Secure Enterprise Endpoint OS (IGEL OS) secures modern enterprise environments in partnership with VMware.

Our experts, including CTO Matthias Haas, Vice President of Sales Brian Cornell, Vice President of Vertical Solutions James Millington, and Claudio Nessi, Regional Vice President, were on hand to share insights with organizations attending the event on how to manage endpoint security and cloud applications while saving money.

Some of the key takeaways our team took from the event include:

  1. The elephant in the room. We all know changes are coming at VMware and that, unfortunately, people will be affected. But what was encouraging from an EUC perspective was a signaling of the continued innovation and investment in the Workspace ONE and Horizon platforms.
  2. Optimizing the journey to the cloud. The multi-cloud story applies to end-user compute as well as the data center. Whether through a journey directly from on-premises deployments to DaaS, or split strategies of bursting to the cloud for additional scale or disaster recovery (DR), organizations are looking for flexibility to move between environments easily. Having an endpoint designed for simplicity that can be easily reconfigured to connect to a new desktop environment is critical to the success of these projects.

Download our solution brief, “11 Reasons to Choose IGEL Enterprise Endpoint OS 12 for VMware Workspace ONE and Horizon 8.”

  3. Endpoint security. Security has long been a benefit of virtual desktops. The ability to reboot to a clean image is instrumental in getting organizations up and running in the event of a successful attack. But the benefits of this can be lost if the endpoint doesn’t share the same reboot to clean approach. IGEL’s Preventive Security Model eliminates endpoint vulnerabilities and enables centralized management of IGEL endpoints from the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS), regardless of physical location. IGEL and VMware Horizon are among the most resilient IT infrastructures to combat ransomware and other malware.
  4. Partnerships. Seeing such a great turnout of partners – and friends was great. The integrations between Workspace ONE and Horizon platform and the rich partner ecosystem help our end customers deliver meaningful solutions for specific use cases, such as healthcare. IGEL’s newly announced integration with Workspace ONE Identity Services is one example of a customer-driven partnership where we delivered the right user experience to solve specific workflow issues.
  5. User Experience and Cost Optimization. Digital employee experience is a hot topic for many organizations – and we agree. In fact, we’d be very appreciative if you’d take two minutes to fill out the survey we are running with our partner, LG. Ensuring simple, consistent access without delays, distractions, or security issues is core to our Secure Enterprise Endpoint OS. As budgets tighten and organizations look for ways to support innovations like DaaS, Cloud, and SaaS (and working out how to incorporate AI!), optimizing your endpoint for the cloud is a critical part of this strategy.

Download our solution brief here to learn how IGEL and VMware make the “perfect pair” for easy, safe, and cost-effective end-user computing for today’s modern enterprises.

This blog is part of an (end) point-of-view series on the digital workspace from IGEL’s Office of the CTO.

The principle of ‘waste not, want not’ was first declared 300 years ago. It is a reasonable idea, to avoid wasteful use of resources and provide for a more secure future. However, the principle has lost ground; the IT environment being one example. A spending study by Flexera reports underutilization or wasted IT spending of 36 percent for desktop software, 33 percent for data center software, 32 percent for SaaS and 32 percent for IaaS/PaaS.

The study confirms that enterprises continue to spend needless dollars and use precious IT time, loading up their hardware endpoint devices with up to a dozen pieces of software – and required agents – before the end user can even work productively with the device. It also confirms some of this software spend never even makes it to the desktop.

Waste Not Your Software Spend

A good place to start leaning up IT’s approach to software investment is the OS. IGEL is passionate about telling enterprises that the best strategy is using an OS – preferably Linux – that can deliver only the apps a user needs – from the cloud. Rather than front load a bunch of software that may never be used, an OS designed for an economic need-only model, is the smarter choice.

To support this model IT needs to house data and applications in the cloud, separating them from endpoint devices. Leaning up the endpoint with IGEL OS can deliver a 90% reduction in footprint size compared to Windows since the data has been moved off the desktop to the cloud. That is a key pillar of IGEL strategy: using a secure OS that not only supports cost savings but reduces risk by taking critical data off the endpoint and further minimizing an attack surface.

Leaning up with Hardware Conservation

A leaner approach also applies to the hardware itself which has several key benefits:

  • Taking applications off a hardware device and moving them to the cloud enables IT to use existing hardware as a much leaner, efficient endpoint platform. Application updates then occur in the cloud, with a faster, more accurate, and less energy-consuming process.
  • Combined with a hardware-agnostic OS like IGEL, enterprises can execute Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD) on Azure, saving money by extending the life of existing hardware and minimizing CAPEX.
  • With a hardware-agnostic IGEL OS, enterprises can convert any x86, 64-bit device into a secure, standardized endpoint, supporting a seamless transition to any virtual workspace platform.

Flagging Underutilization

Through asset management platforms IT can audit, and track software license use to flag software and SaaS investments contributing to wasted spend. IGEL adds to these budget controls via its COSMOS IGEL License Portal (ILP), a cloud-based solution to manage IGEL licensing. Assigning, removing, moving, monitoring, and subscription administration are accessed via an intuitive interface and set as automatic or manual handling.

A Leaner Blueprint

As more workloads move to the cloud, and a hybrid/distributed workforce is the standard, the necessity of investing in costly hardware is diminishing even further. Rather than purchase hardware with little ROI, the lean smart approach is using a secure OS with the capability to deliver apps via the cloud and VDI platforms and to get tighter control of software and SaaS spend via asset management and better license usage administration. This combination will help reduce wasted spend and free up budget for tasks that can provide clear ROI.

Today, end user computing (EUC) just got more flexible and even more secure. IGEL is now shipping the new COSMOS endpoint platform which enables secure, efficient, managed access to any form of digital workspaces, from any device to any cloud.

Read the announcement press release here.

COSMOS marks a revolution in end user computing. With a new OS, an updated management platform and a number of new cloud services, it gives employees an exceptional workspace experience while empowering EUC administrators with greater security, management, and control.

Built for Hybrid Work

COSMOS uniquely supports today’s Hybrid worlds. It offers the hybrid worker access to their hybrid workspace, delivered from hybrid cloud and an increasingly growing set of hybrid applications. It also offers unmatched speed and flexibility for employees and administrators alike as they adopt any type of workspace experience – from VDI and DaaS to SaaS – all from a single highly secure and manageable endpoint OS.

Modular for both Flexibility and Control

COSMOS features a distinctly new OS architecture for more agility and customization in the hybrid world. For the first time, the new IGEL OS architecture completely separates the base OS from its full suite of validated and integrated applications – which are now available through the IGEL App Portal (just one of the new cloud services available with COSMOS). A new version of the IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) included with COSMOS provides support for both IGEL OS 11 and the new IGEL OS 12. This provides ultimate flexibility and lends itself to helping IGEL’s existing customers easily migrate their current endpoint estate.

This modularity delivers the flexibility organizations need to evolve and adopt new EUC technologies at their own pace while still empowering users with the productive and secure computing experience they demand in today’s hybrid work world.

Secure Endpoint Computing

IGEL OS 12 takes the proven security of IGEL to new levels. By separating the IGEL OS endpoint from local and cloud-delivered apps and services, IGEL OS not only updates faster but has an even smaller footprint, for a reduced attack surface. Adding to its security features are new secure unified communication protocols between the UMS and IGEL OS-powered endpoints, which couple with the security of the Linux-based read-only operating system IGEL is already known for. Together, there isn’t a safer way to empower remote work productivity.

Faster Onboarding and Faster Updates

Thanks to the IGEL Onboarding Service, new with COSMOS, employees can self-enroll new devices in under five minutes, allowing faster deployment of workspaces to remote workers, and removing the burden on IT. And with more devices from Lenovo, HP and LG Business solutions now shipping with IGEL OS as standard, thin clients, laptops and desktop machines can be shipped direct to employees from the factory, enabling almost instant, secure access to their data and applications – straight out of the shipping carton!

In addition to the new Onboarding Service, IGEL OS, the new management architecture and the introduction of the IGEL App Portal “store” also means that updates post-deployment are now significantly faster and easier than ever before. New updates from IGEL Ready vendors, such as Microsoft, Citrix, VMware and ControlUp are available and can be automatically imported into the COSMOS platform from the IGEL App Portal. These updates, in turn, can be rapidly deployed thanks to the new OS architecture and independently updated without the need to update the underlying OS. For our customers, it means IT teams and employees alike get the latest features and innovations from IGEL and our technology partners faster than ever!

Support for What’s Next

IGEL COSMOS is designed for today’s and tomorrow’s digital workspaces. Supporting modern end user computing, where digital workspaces may be delivered from any on-prem or cloud-based source, COSMOS is the future-proofed solution delivering workspaces and apps no matter how they evolve over time. It streamlines the workload for IT endpoint administrators while providing a secure, modern, and productive desktop for end users.

Even more, it puts frustrating, tedious disruptions such as onboarding, updates, patches, and endpoint troubleshooting in the past, making life much easier for IT and end-users with the time-to-productivity faster than ever.

Simply put, COSMOS is end-user computing evolved. Its modular architecture, granular endpoint control, and secure, managed access to any cloud-delivered digital workspace powers great user experiences for today’s hybrid work.

Recent news regarding the two most historically influential companies within the VDI industry has shone a spotlight on an ever-changing, dynamic environment for organizations looking to deliver secure, controlled, and productive end-user virtual experiences to their people.  Last year, Citrix announced major organizational leadership changes coupled with some significant employee layoffs. And just last week, Broadcom announced its intention to acquire VMware for $61 billion, making it one of the largest acquisitions in tech history.

For organizations using technologies and products from these two companies to deliver virtual apps and desktops to their end-users, some may be feeling a bit concerned about the future, especially in terms of how they will continue to manage and control their end-users’ digital workspaces.

The Future Requires Agility

At IGEL, we view this very recent history as further evidence that the delivery of digital workspaces to end users is continuing to evolve. That is why IGEL OS is designed for secure access to any digital workspace regardless of the products and technologies used for delivery and access. Whether it’s virtual apps, virtual desktops, web-based apps, DaaS, SaaS, multi-cloud, Citrix, VMware, Microsoft AVD/Windows 365/cloud PC, IGEL OS is the lightweight, modular, and secure Linux-based OS that is ideal for any and all of these scenarios. And any others that may emerge in the future as more and more apps and workloads move to the cloud.

Think of it this way. To access any form of cloud-delivered apps or services from your endpoint device of choice, the best option is to use an endpoint operating system that:

  • Is secure from malware and other endpoint threats
  • Is easy to manage and control at scale
  • Enables a great end-user experience for a highly distributed workforce
  • Reduces hardware capital and management and energy operating costs

As the way we all work and communicate continues to evolve over the next 5, 10, or even 20 years, organizations powering their endpoints today with IGEL OS know they already have the ideal managed endpoint OS for secure access to any digital workspace. It has been purpose-built to deliver freedom of choice and agility for a future-proofed digital workspace.

Further, for those companies currently worried about ransomware or bogged down with managing their hundreds or even many thousands of endpoints, the correct endpoint OS choice is IGEL OS. It will help IT  teams sleep better at night and make both IT and end-users more productive now and into the future. There’s no better time to discover the value of IGEL OS. It’s as easy as a simple download from IGEL.com.

I’m often asked why is IGEL investing in IGEL OS (RPI4) as an alternative to the Intel x86-64 bit architecture.  There is no simple answer, but in a nutshell, this is why IGEL OS on ARM:

  • ARM is here to stay (witness Apple’s move to M1)
  • Choice is good – competition is good, it keeps us all honest
  • RPI4 often offers a smaller form factor than the equivalent x86 device
  • Etc….

That’s all well and good, but why should you care?

Here’s why – because for the same reason that IGEL OS runs on all sorts of different x86-64 devices from HP, Lenovo, LG, Elo Touch, Advantech, OnLogic, etc., at IGEL we believe you need even more choice.  Hence our port of IGEL OS to the NComputing RX420 (IGEL) and RX440 (IGEL) thin clients.

“But surely,” (please don’t call me Shirley – sorry I couldn’t resist) you’ll tell me “some peripherals and add-on software are not available for what we need to do.” Maybe so, but the NComputing RX420 and RX440 thin clients are ideal for standard office, retail terminals, and other use cases, where there is limited need for unified communication within Citrix environments. Further, due to its small form factor and affordability, these endpoint solutions open up new market segments and are perfect for a host of use cases you may not have considered before, such as:

USE CASE 1: Digital Signage:

There are very few smaller, less power-hungry devices out there than the NComputing RX420 running IGEL OS, and it’s perfect for managing a display screen, with regularly updated information and displays.  No need to use a full-blown x86 thin client to do this – just hook up your RX420 with the HDMI adaptor cable and voila! You are good to go.

USE CASE 2: Industrial Control:

Once again, the small form factor and ease of installation with a VESA mount, or stuff it in a proverbial “corner” means the RX420 with IGEL OS is ideal for managing shop floor devices. You can even add code for customized control functions and the like.

USE CASE 3: Citrix-Powered Shared Work Spaces:

Use the NComputing solution with IGEL OS for the use case where you need a dedicated device running the monitor in a conference room. It’s perfectly easy to configure with the IGEL UMS, and low cost means you won’t break the bank in outfitting your shared spaces.  Plus, with the Citrix Casting capability it’s really nifty how you can walk into a conference room and cast from your phone or another device to the IGEL OS-powered NComputing endpoint.

USE CASE 4: Kiosks:

Libraries and other locations need a secure, un-hackable appliance to allow easy access to the internet through a browser.  The Chromium browser on the RX420 or RX440 powered by IGEL is ideal for an easily managed and secure appliance where internet access must be tightly controlled.

Shift from survive to thrive with an on-campus and remote learning environment that’s consistent, flexible, and secure

While there is much discussion about the future of remote work in recent times, less focus has been placed on the future of higher education remote learning environments. While most universities offer international programs facilitated by blended learning models, this was on a much smaller scale for a limited number of students according to IT capacity and resources. Then everything changed in early 2020.

The pandemic shone a spotlight on the importance for universities and colleges to have an education continuity plan in place. Establishing a consistent hybrid learning space as the norm rather than the exception to enable students to securely access applications and resources whether on-campus, at their home, or in their dorm room. Equipping faculty and staff with reliable lecturing, tutorial, and administrative capabilities from a remote location play a crucial part in this space.

Empower faculty and students with a collaborative and secure learning space on any device in a hybrid university campus.

Greater choice enhances user experience

With IGEL OS on their endpoint device of choice students, faculty and staff can easily and quickly log into their university’s Citrix Workspace. Even in areas of variable network bandwidth, or a change of location while working on a task, the user can reconnect to a familiar graphical user interface and pick up on the last point in their session on another device.

Optimize IT Resources and Save

Citrix and IGEL enable university IT teams to leverage their existing resources and technology investments. Repurposing existing hardware with IGEL OS saves IT budget while supporting green IT to exceed sustainability goals. Shifting to a remote learning environment can be a practical change.

Secure BYOD

IGEL OS runs on any compatible x86-64 device–PCs, laptops, all-in-one devices, and thin clients. This enables IT to use existing hardware or provide a secure BYOD strategy for distributed professors, trainers, and students. IGEL OS can be temporarily installed on a PC or laptop by inserting the IGEL UD Pocket, a USB device to boot from IGEL OS and access Citrix Workspace directly.

Inherent and advanced security features in IGEL OS and the Citrix Zero Trust approach protect system integrity from the user device to the Citrix learning workspace.

Together Citrix and IGEL offer a streamlined solution for the university of the future enabling virtual computer labs, secure computer-based exam environments while optimizing IT resources and campus facilities.

We already know that IGEL OS, the next-gen edge OS for cloud workspaces, is highly efficient and requires minimal CPU and memory resources on endpoint devices. But what we had strongly suspected has now been proved true. On key user experience (UX) and performance metrics IGEL OS is better, faster, and stingier* than Windows OS.

A detailed study by RawWorks found that when accessing cloud-delivered digital workspaces, IGEL OS on endpoints offers superior performance when compared to Windows, providing a consistently ‘snappier’ user experience. Intensive video conferencing and graphics use, more important than ever in our consumer-driven culture of widely distributed users, are a more satisfying and streamlined experience using IGEL OS, the report notes.

IGEL OS Delivers a More Robust End-User Experience

RawWorks compared IGEL’s Linux-based edge operating OS for Cloud Workspaces with Windows, running all scenarios on Microsoft Azure in combination with Citrix Cloud. The scenarios were run on three thin client endpoint devices: the HP t640, DELL WYSE 5070, and LENOVO ThinkCentre M625Q.

They recorded people using these two operating system alternatives for Zoom and Teams, to watch videos and to use tools like PowerPoint. These videos were added to performance data and the conclusion is for all tested endpoints, IGEL OS outperforms Windows while delivering a similar or better user experience.

IGEL excelled in the four performance metrics:

  • Endpoint CPU usage
  • Frames per second (FPS)
  • Round trip time (RTT)
  • Bandwidth usage

IGEL is Faster and More Efficient

By using less CPU power for graphics and video production tasks, for example, IGEL runs faster and more efficiently. In some cases, the CPU usage when using Windows is more than three times higher than IGEL OS.

Since IGEL is all about delivering the best user experience (UX) at the endpoint, we are especially pleased that we had superior performance with less latency (lower RTT) and a smoother video experience (framerate). IGEL saves customers from suffering through latency during Zoom calls, or videos that are jerky due to poor support of 60 FPS framerate.

Users running a graphics-intensive presentation in PowerPoint on Dell, for example, also will enjoy a higher framerate with considerably lower CPU consumption.

Given that IGEL OS delivers superior endpoint performance that meets users’ demands for a seamless video conferencing and rich multimedia experience, why would anyone choose Windows OS to access their digital workspaces? From the RawWorks testing results, we think that is a very good question to contemplate.

View the complete RawWorks report.

*Less CPU usage with video conferencing
